although i won't have the money for 3-4 months i am wondering what would be a good atv that would be low maintainance and cost no more than $2500 i have seen a few 400's for about that in the years 03-04 what do you think?

Agreed with the above. The 400EX is pretty much bulletproof. They're easy to drive, plus they have reverse. I also have a nice shape 2006 with a few goodies I'd let you have for $2700.

get a good helmet 1st, get one that has snell approval, mabe some body armour, and good boots. looks like you are looking for used, make sure the brakes are in top knotch condition, decent tires, and all bolts are tight.

don't buy someone else POS, just because it is cheap. you don't want to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair or worse.

I was amazed by my friends wifes hawkeye 400, dam things fast and goes trough anything, kinda made me want one. Independant suspension, true 4x4 the only prob was no low gear but it didn't seem to need it.

I vote for Z400. I had one when I was 14, great machine, and just as bullet proof and the EX, slightly more spunk however.

Maybe look at a Honda 300 ex nearly bulletproof.

The 300 Honda is the ultimate park and ride machine and bullet proof just needs diff lock and a 2" lift. To bad my uncle wont sell his things mint and he has a lot done to it.

ya he's thinkin 300 fourtrax.....

also depends on what riding ability the 15 year old has...

my 300ex was ported-polished, piped , geared down ect.....

would hold its own with 400's till the top end....

awsome on fuel and was so light...

Most the guys i used to to ride with that race quads (note used to) sux balls off the trail. we spend more time pulling then trough the mud than anything. If you want the best of both a bike is were its at i used to be able to go any were an my bike but your body sure takes a chit kicking worse than sleding.

400EX would be my choice for your price range. A Raptor would be my number 1 but might be tough finding one in good shape for that price.
