That’s where a rich polluter puts money into a green energy scheme in an amount that reduces the carbon output of something to compensate for the carbon their activity spewed into the atmosphere. Instead of paying a fine for polouting you buy carbon credits which is a "permit to polout" to a given amount to suit your needs. And you get looked at as a good guy.
