2010 F-150 5.4 just turned 80,000k. Cam phasers and right exhaust manifold done under warranty. I’ve heard lots of talk in here about not using the Ford spec oil.
Anyone with experience have a suggestion on weight, synthetic, Dino oil etc. ?
Thanks it’s oil change day tomorrow

If you just had you phasers done you should be good for awhile, my brother had to put 15w40 in his to quiet them down.

I would like to know what oil guys are trying as well to prevent them from getting noisy. Maybe try a ford forum?

Can’t comment on your truck but my 08 hemi calls for 5w20. And it burns it bad. Got rid of that and went to 5w30 it pretty much stopped burning oil and motor is way quieter while at high rpm. Went from adding 2-3 litres per oil change till only needing to add some right at the time to change oil. That 5w20 is to thin imo

That's interesting, my 11 hemi burns oil bad too. But it runs perfect. Dodge I believe says 1 quart per 1000 miles is acceptable.

If you tend to idle truck a lot ? Bump the viscosity as well .
5/30 is as low as I go even if they recommend 5/20 .

The recommended oils are way too thin, the only reason they’re going with them is for increased mileage.

I have been using 0w40 in everything I own from lawnmowers to heavy equipment for many years with zero failures. Just finally parked my work car with 500K on it. Change oil every 10k on the vehicles.

I have heard new engines (specifically the hemi) use 5/20 because of small oil passages that thicker oils wont flow too parts of the engine effectively. (Not sure if that is true)

I wouldnt mind trying 5/30 dont want to fk the engine and void warranty though.

They say it’s for the cylinder cut system. Ram 5/30 in all my hemis (4 now) no issues. But if I had warranty I would run the recommended oil, could save you headaches

That shouldn't be an issue. Both 5w-20 and 5w-30 will have the same viscosity when cold (particularly at startup), which is where low flow issues will present themselves. The difference in the 2 oils is viscosity at operating temperature, the 5w-20 will be thinner when the oil is hot. 5W-20 is specified to slightly reduce fuel consumption, I like 5w-30 for the extra viscosity, unless I'm satisfying a warranty requirement.

I'm in the process of switching everything I own over to Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 to avoid keeping half a dozen different oils on the shelf, as it's compatible with everything I own.

I run Petro 0-40 fully synth in everything. From what I’ve read all the super thin #-20 oils are for increased claimed efficiency claims, damned the lubricity and longevity.

Its true that the 5-20 was used for better fuel economy. When it first came out Ford increased their fleet average by .2 of a mile per gallon which turned in to millions of dollars saved from EPA fines.

The 6.4 hemi comes 0W40 from the factory. If you read the owners manual it usually has a chart with the oil viscosity and temp recommended.
