here's another one. This is from a hill that always slides every year several times per year. The track is from a one ski machine. For the most part I was impressed where they could go, but several places they cut across the face of hills that always slide. The one hill (not this one) has a sign before it letting everyone know that 3 people have been killed on it, and yes they cut all the way across that one too.

A one ski machine as in a snowhawk, or a bike with a kit. The pic is from today, and the tracks are from yesterday.

It's hard to see tracks by the overhang (not the best photo), but there were guys trying to take this down. We didn't stick around to find out! McBride at Lucille.

I think that all you guys that wrongly jumped on the people in the photos without knowing the full story should issue an apology.

3 years ago we saw the same thing! About 10-12 sleds sitting at the base & 1 sled taunting the cornice. What stands to memory was that the left portion had dropped prior. We went up into the butterfly for a few hours & when we came out approx. 200 meters of new cornice had dropped leaving chunks the size of half a house. The size factor of that cornice is visible from Mcbride!

Good thread. I like the idea of posting pics even if they look worse than they really were if anything for the sheer education value for more inexperienced sledders. Armchair quarterbacks need to shut it unless they can contribute something positive.
Doesn't need to be a chit on the person in the pic thread but just pointing out possible problem areas.
The first pic is a classic, someone stuck and other riders over and undercutting the slope.
Or even helping someone get unstuck and driving passed them to park above etc. I have been guilty of this move. :nono:

Keep em coming ........

its not about WHO is in the photos its about what is going on,, this is too help people not to try and point blame,,,, lets pretend the people are from elswhere.....

again there are many newbies every year who are not aware so hopefuly some info here can help educate.......

p.s. why so offended?????,,,, nobody stated names or laid blame directly to any group or person,, I had no clue who was in the pics and I dont really care who is in the pics....

Lmao to all the arm chair quarterbacks! So easy to sit and judge peope, situations, and a "still" picture! Some of you are actually comical!!!! There have been mistakes by backcountry riders in the past and will likely be more in the future, and that's true of back country skiiers, climbers, quad riders etc. However there has been a great deal of quality education and awareness over the past few years from a lotta riders-clubs-individuals and manufact

People are quick to pass judgement and thoise are normally the groups are and peeps who are just as ignorant.

Deont worry Stephy-im sure people that know you and your riding friends understand how educated you are in this aspect of avies!

They re just mis or uninformed.....LOL

nothing was ever directed to Stephy or her group??? and I would sugest newbies avoid that ridge....

as well you are corect so many are misinformed so please help them learn....

Holy fawk must every thread on this site turn into a pissing match? I logged on a couple times in the past few days and thought maybe there would be some good threads to read but no dice. Getting kinda tired of reading between the lines here.. JMO.

wow I agree buddy, not sure why everyone is so defensive....

OK - look at your first post. You say "riding out of bounds", then post a pic of someone who has been determined to be riding IN BOUNDS. See what I mean?

You actually surprise me on this one Dinner...I know the spirit of what you are trying to promote (and I agree!) but the wording at least to me went sideways.

Just my 0.02

Pistonbroke;753828 OK - look at your first post. You say "riding out of bounds" said:

ok I can appolagize, Im sorry and I meant no direct negative coments to anyone,,, maybe my wording was off but I never intended to lay blame to any specific person or group....it was to TRY and help others...

and PB you know I am far from perfect lol,, but you should know I am not trying to point fingers directly at anyone so thats why I am not sure why some peeps got so excited especialy when they did nothing wrong and if they did who cares lets learn and move on....

I like to sled and I have learned a lot the last 4 years so I try and spread the love a bit.....

I thought the point of this thread was to educate other people, oops sorry if someone's feathers got ruffled, all I see are people jumping all over someone while yelling and screaming "stop jumping all over people". It's hypocritical. On the same note, others seem to want to crucify someone for a mistake, pretty safe to say none of us are perfect angels (except me - so kiss my @$$ beotches), so let's not be too hasty with judgement OK?

I think people just need to relax and take the thread at face value. They're just someone's opinions. And opinions are like a$$holes, everyone's got one.

I don't care who it was, the optics of the photo look negative and are undeniable. There is an obvious slide area directly below the rider. Maybe it was 3 weeks old, maybe it was fresh. I can't tell from the photo and neither can anyone else here.

The point of this thread was education. I give credit to the person who took the photo, I give credit to the person who posted the photo, and I give credit to the person who explained the photo.

There have been some great comments brought up, I think that educating other riders at the time is a crucial element of all this. As sledders, we really need to discuss this on the hill, not on the internet, and in a mature and helpful tone, not in a condescending demeanor.

We also need to be open minded about our actions and understand the perception from other sledders. I for one, have no problems telling someone who is doing something unsafe, that I feel there is a better approach to what they are trying and also back it up with an explanation. I also have no problem listening to someone tell me that what they thought I was doing was wrong, and have them back it up with an explanation. It's only when someone can't back up their actions with solid reasoning and knowledge that it becomes an issue IMO.

Sometimes its simply a poor judgement call and you just need to apologize - maybe you came zooming into the parking lot near a group of families out for the day and someone thought you were going a little too fast around their kids (their perception) - maybe you were in complete control of your sled and thought you had slowed enough (your perception). One of the parents comes over and starts beaking at you - REALIZE the perception, ask them to calm down, explain your side and apologize. Likely they will as well. If they don't - oh well, fawk 'em. Don't be an arrogant a$$, people have a right to be concerned about their safety. REALIZE its a perception from their end - and that if they thought you were going fast then, then they should have seen you about 3 km's ago at WFO....LOL.

Same goes for if someone highmarks above you while stuck - get unstuck and go talk to them with a civil tone - if they tell you they know what they were doing and were just being a dick to intentionally try and cut a slide loose above you - then grab a spark plug into your fists and leave them lying in the snow with no teeth. Doubtful you're going to need the second approach - most people do not intentionally put others in harms way and will see your point if explained properly.

This case is a perfect example: if the person who took the photo had approached the guy and they had discussed it in a civil manner, both sides would have learned something.

But what's done is done. Can we all agree that the internet can be a blessing and a curse - all in the same thread?

Sorry about the long post - that's my "outsider looking in" viewpoint.

I'll play, does anyone see anything wrong in this picture??

IMG_4023.jpg

In case the resolution is poor, take note of the sled turning out right in the middle of the picture, you might also be able to see, if you look really hard, a small 50foot cornice above him.

Whats more disturbing is what you don't see, like a group of spotters, his buddy was taking pulls up the east face of the same mountain, at the same time, you can see his tracks on the left.

I can see it now,....

Headline news,...

"Experienced Mountain Sledder, fully trained,... DEAD"

This is why our wives worry

He's wondering where to find his buddy under all the avy debris? Maybe he's thinking he shouldnt have smoked that last doobie?? Or maybe he's wondering when the sled is coming back to get him, as the fresh snow appears to have fallen???

Obviously it looks like he came over the convex part of the slope and broke it right at the rock outcrop, the slide then propogated to other rocks (thin snow cover) in the area, almost doesn't look fresh(ish) in the pic anyway, maybe a day or two old? Could be a skiff of new snow on the rocks to the right. Not a big slope but obvious signs of movement also from the slide on the left.
