Buy a mini DV off ebay for cheap and if you lose it or damage it just get a new one. The mini DV still are the easiest to edit and work well in the cold.

I picked up a Sony HDR-XR200V 120GB High Definition Hard Drive Camcorder. Easy to use and has lots of neat little futures.

Canon Rebel T1i..., deadly but affordable SLR, with the bonus of shooting HD video...Nikon also has something in the same class that is similar I beleive. Or for a helemt camera the GoPro Hero is a great price and takes great videos.

I've got the Canon HV30, it takes HD miniDV and is a great camera, Veedy recommended it to me. Takes pictures to MiniSD card too. I was told to stay away from hard drive cameras for the cold and sledding. Dont like the abuse.

How long of battery life?I know in colder weather won't last as long but just an average..Thanks

You use 2 AAA Lithium batteries ... it was minus 10 and I got over an hour the first day then 30 or so minutes the second day before I replaced them...exactly what I expected. Keep a couple sets in your pocket...I hear rechargeable lithium's work but not as long...but you can recharge them.

It really depends on what you want to get out of it. I bought the Sony HDR-XR200V last year as well, and it's a great camera....but pricey. I know lots say stay away from hard drives but mine works great. Just make sure you protect it properly while riding. You should be doing that with any camera! I love not having to fast forward and rewind tape!

Most people probably don't need HD now, but what about down the road. Another thing to keep in mind if you go the HD route....I've got a 1080HD helmet cam now and the video quality is incredible....but now I need to get more computer just to edit the videos. It can be a never ending cycle.

Most important thing to me is to get the best image stabilization you can afford. I was amazed at the difference when I upgraded to a decent camcorder. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Another feature I wish I had but don't is a viewfinder. That little monitor can be almost impossible to see at times.

Above all, have fun with it! :)
