it can happen to anyone........ One of the dealers that came to the event was stopped and given a $130.00 ticket because the break away trailer brake battery was dead/not working........... This was a brand new trailer, never used before.....how would someone know, without actually testing it, and no one checks the break away every trip!!! I actually tested mine while it was at the shop the day before we left, and while out there, thought i'd give it a pull, and guess what.... Dead battery!!!! Jus' sayin'

Is there a reason the break away battery cant be wired into the park lights or aux so that it gets a charge at some point in the day? may not work on a holiday trailer though, should be sitting around the fire:beer: in the dark anyways. Cant expect that little battery to do its thing the way it is set up on most trailers and work for more than one trip. Mine was not working when tri;ed 2 yrs a go, wired it into my aux furnace batteries and always good now. Sorry if this is already discussed, did a quick scan of the thread and see other threads getting bashed for repetitiveness lol;)

these brakeaway systems are so stupid. they are all dead. how often do these batteries need to be replaced? are they charged by the vehicle while driving? obviously not...are you supposed to throw them on the charger before a trip?

They need to be replaced when they are no longer any good. They are supposed to be charged by the tow vehicle and will be if the tow vehicle is wired to the trailer correctly. If you need to charge it before your trip then thats good, because it would suck if you were fined for your breakaway system not working because of a dead battery. It would also be a good idea to find out why the battery was dead to begin with, then fix it.:beer:

If you're towing a trailer that has brakes then your vehicle needs to be wired for brakes, or at least should be. If it's not then you get to post here about how it was unfair that you were fined because your braking system wasn't working. This includes being wired for charging the breakaway battery. If it isn't then get it wired. That little battery has only one job, and that is to apply full current to your brakes, locking up your wheels and creating smoke that billow's out from underneath your trailer upon activation of the system. When the system is not activated the battery just sits there waiting for its turn to do its thing. They last for a very long time when they are looked after correctly, the same as anything does that is looked after correctly.

It already is...it charges off your 'Hot' line in your trailer wiring...

Well, they are supposed to be. How old are these trailers?? Traffic safety act says so. All imported and manufactured trailers are set up this way (today)

Princess auto sells the 3 led battery/charger/brake away kit for $59.99, maybe by "Hoppy". Just put 1 on my trailer last weekend. When the truck is plug into the trailer, the battery is getting charged. Image most sled trailers just sit all summer. The little battery goes dead, then comes along winter, it freezes. Then it doesnt matter how much chargering it gets, its time for a new battery. Get idea on the solar panel charger, going have to get me 1 of thoses.

Thats what I did on my last trailer. I put a big RV battery inside and wired it to the break-away and got rid of the little POS battery. Than I hooked the lights and the truck to charge, you would be surprised how nice it is to have lights when your not hooked up. I'll do it again on my next trailer.

BC is a cash grabbing province. The Cops are all about power trips. Why would any one be surprised to hear that cops in small towns in BC are a pain in the ass? I hate traveling in BC.

stay in alberta forever then if you dont like the rules!

We are going to try and get a Dummied Down version of the Alberta and BC traffic laws as they refer to hauling trailers to more sledders can be aware of the rules and differences between provinces.
As it is today, the law is the law and you (we the sledding community) need to abide by them or expect fines or your trailer seized and towed.

Its not like its overly complicated now...how much more dumbed down do you want it??? If Bison drivers that get their cousins to take the tests for them can follow the rules, you would think some sledders could pull it off...

I inadvertently tested the breakaway switch on my 5th wheel holiday trailer last summer on holidays....turned a sharp corner in Edmonton and the cable caught on something in the box popping it out and screeched me to a halt. felt like somewhat of an idiot getting out of my truck in the middle of traffic and hooking it back up....:eek:

X2!!! Exact same. Cable caught under the one hitch bracket in the box when going around a corner. Luckily it was at the storage place on gravel. Left some big ruts, good peace of mind though.
