Ric you are 100% correct in saying they aid in atomization of the fuel, better atomization equals a cleaner burn, like a throttle body spacer on tbi automotive engines

Common comments on reed spacers....."Moving the reeds out of the case increases atomization." "Spacers give the charge a straighter path to rear ports."

That's the theory anyway.

One must be sure what they are trying to achieve. Increasing case volume by moving the reeds out by spacers "might" give you better bottom end but will likely not effect (or might hinder) top end performance, and vice versa.

Theory is that moving reed cages back unblocks the passage to an intake boost port. However, by increasing the case volume you also increase the compressed volume. Combine that with other mods that can increase compressed volume and you will likely start to lose power. Reed spacers are in effect a bandaid fix for poor porting. Performance benefits of reed spacers on a non highly modified engine are negligable. To truly open up the boost ports you need to properly flow (port) the engine. If you port the engine then you probably don't want reed spacers as lowering the compressed volume too far can hinder performance as well. This is why some people will tell you that a higher compression head is needed with porting. That depends on the type of port job though (exhaust port timing....another thread).

That said, reed spacers are cheap, easy to install and will in effect give a slight seat of the pants improvement in bottom end/mid range throttle response. "If" that's only one of the mods you plan to do.

With V-Force, Boyesen, Carbontech reeds, it's likely more due to the fact lighter, stiffer reeds offer better throttle response as they can responde to engine fluctuations faster. Not due to HP gains.

Just my 2 cents.........

That said, reed spacers are cheap....

Great points in that post^^^^! But I would argue that they are cheap. Comparatively to the overall cost of the sled: Yes they are cheap. Dollar for dollar comparatively with other mods: Not really IMO. Take the $200 you would spend on reeds and put it into a clutch kit if you haven't already done so, no point in making more power if its not getting to the ground. Reeds should be one of the last mods IMO, yes they are an easy install but not worth it unless some of the better "bang for the buck" mods have already been done. Just my opinion. :)

Spacers themselves are cheap. It's the reed block combos like V-Force and Boysen that are pricey. I run Carbon Tech reeds in all my sleds and have been extremely happy with them. I do it for throttle response and petal consistancy over time.

I agree that first and foremost always look at clutching!

I think what deano is trying to say is, that the V force reed cage takes up less space in the port, so that there is more spce for the feaul and air before it reaches the engine. It does not increase the volume it frees up used volume by the cage.

PS does this make sense cause i confused my self a little bit ;)

What im going to say is, at the end of the day everyone seems to have their own idea's as to what makes for good engine mods as apposed to following BASIC physics and what works and doesnt work when it comes to an internal combustion engine.(not a motor) And thats ok its what makes business, business its also the difference between a working engine and a non working engine. We could try and stroke our ego's all day long with fancy jargon but at the end of the day most ppl wont understand. Zrrr this is not a cut at you:cool: To all of you who have WORKING engines My hats off to you, to those of you who dont, time to find SOMEONE ELSE to build your engine.:)

I really wanted to stay out of this discussion and I probably should now too. But Deano raises the best point yet........at the end of the day most ppl wont understand.
By no means am I saying everybody in this thread doesn't understand either, so dont send me any hate mail.
Most people need pictures/drawings with personel teachings to understand the workings of power units.
Now back to the regularly scheduled program, that is in progress.

It's threads like these where I continue to learn something new. It has taken me years to learn what I know and will take me years to learn more of what I don't know. Everyone has an opinion and they are all valid. Without varying opinion and the option/ability to test theories we would never get anywhere and would all be riding the same sled with the same engine. No fun in that!! Best thing I ever heard was; believe half of what you see and even less of what you hear. Great thing about these forums is you can take in all this info, chew on it for a while, then make your own informed decisions. Someome may stumble on to something that flies in the face of all these theories and that will benefit us all in the end. That's called creative thinking and progress. One of the great things about public forums.

I personally love this sort of discussion. Deano, Glengine and a few others really intrigue me with their knowledge/opinions.

It's all good!

I can't agree more. What I'am trying to say is" your guys "discussion is beyond most peeps understanding. Cross section diagrams with discriptions will help the education of many peeps. EG case vol. Many peeps donot want to post a ? in fear of looking uneducated. A simple ? on some sites will get you tarred and feathered like the village idiot. For the good of the site and to be helpfull to the lesser experienced I was just saying have your discussion in a simpler easy to understand way. I would love to see a discussion that doesn't immediately start a wave of pm's that start with " what are they talking about, or what does this mean?
Just remember when you guys chat back and forth in depth, that no one replies with . What do you think I was born yesterday? or Do you think I'am stupid? What may seem obvious to you is a education for others. I think the site is set up for the chit and giggles but first and foremost for the education and betterment of the sport.
Just a suggestion ......the knowledge is great and you owe the person who taught you ..........to pay it forward.

Yah it is i agree there.. It's a good place for people to learn new things no matter how long yo have been in or aroud the industry.. Sometimes some of us can get a little to indepth in like the math and physic's of it all and kinda forget that there are some people out there that dont understand what is being said at all.. And as far as i'm concerned i try to help anyone i can with infoand insight.. I've learned a few things on here myself. And have a good time chattin with people. Keep up the good work all..

Hey Snotty.... You Really Are Human.... You Really Aren't As Useless As Your Son Said You Are.... I'll "bop" The Next Peep That Ever Tries To Tell Me That.... You Really Do Care........................ Or Is It Just That You've Seen Too Much Bashing On The Other Sites, When Someone Asks An Innocent Question? ;) We Could Really Get Technical, Like Which Way To Put The Reeds Onto The Case, Or What Is The Ideal Reed Tension And How To Adjust It, Or Is Moto Tassinari Really V-force Reeds(or Not?), Or Which Side Of The Reed Do You Mount Into The Case(concave, Or Convex)......... I Don't Know? Lol;)

I also want to say I dont mind the Pm's. I will always give you my honest opinion if I have a history with the question. I just truelly believe everybodies question can be more completly answered by a greater wealth of knowledge than 1 person.
Thanks for listening coffee is being served in the lobby and drive home safe.
