Used mountain sleds

Looking to buy a $5000-$6000 sled for my 19 year old son to get a start at mountain riding. I haven't really been keeping up to date on reliability issues on 3 to 5 year old sleds.
Looks like I could get a 1500-2500 km 2013-2014 rmk pro or a 2011-2013 summit for the same money, I know have to go 13 or newer on rmks for better motor, not sure on summits, I know the single ring motors were no good?
Looking for recommendations / opinions on best for reliability. I ride a 15 T3.

Pick him up a 12 or 13 XM..... can't go wrong and you should be close on price with the deals out there.

The 2013 came out with the flex track and T-motion as the major up-grade. The initial eTec was in the 2011 with refinements for the 2012. The 2010 Summit was a sold machine as were the 2012's and the 2013's. Can't go wrong with any of those years.

Thanks for the input guys, 12 summit might be the ticket, couple 14 rmks on kijiji with approx 2000 km for around 6k, would be a nice light sled for learner.

There's a couple 2012 XP's for sale in the classified ads by the same guy. Good buys. Stay the same brand as yours for ease of maintenance and convenience.

In my experience, there is a big difference in results between a new mountain rider that comes out with a Pro or XM, compared to any other sled (specifically crossovers, XPs and 4strokes). The ones with the Pro or XM have figured out how to get the sled to go where they want within 3 days of riding. The ones on the other sled don't get it on their first trip, and I don't see them again (may be related to frustration with not getting it).

Small sample size of maybe 12 riders but I'm starting to think the choice of sled for a first trip to the mountains makes a huge difference in how quickly a person figures out how to ride.

It would be good to ride the polaris and skidoo if you can as well. I don't like riding the polaris. It doesn't fit me right but the skidoo does. Opposite for others. I agree with the 2012's being a good year for BRP. At least mine has been. Even my 2012 can am has been great.

I'm on a Skidoo now but had a 12 Pro before and still have a soft spot for the handling of the Pro. Wouldn't trade my Doo for one now but in my opinion those few 13-14 Pros that I've seen out there for around $6000 are smoking deals. I'd be scooping one of those up pronto if that was my price range. 800 XM's just hold there value so much better right now but give the 850 another 1-2 years and you'll be buying them a few grand cheaper too.

What ever you do please don't torture your Son by getting him an XP. Worst handling of the 2 strokes in that price range by far. Don't rule out a 2011 M8 if you can't find the deal you are looking for on a Pro or XM.

Once he gets some skills ect, then get him on a xm or pro

Worst thing you can do is try to get a new rider to dangle off the get go

They get stuck every 20 feet, get tired and are done for the day right away

That's why I mentioned the Cat. Depending on how fast he advanced the XP will need to go down the road. Then you have to try to sell it. The Cat is a stable sled to learn on and will do what he needs as he progresses. With the diamond drive bearing update it should be a reliable sled to boot. Perfect beginner to intermediate sled IMHO.

Good points, as I'm going to be the one helping him dig out every 20ft. Will have to hit the gym to shape up for that vs my own sled.

Well it hasn't taken long in the current buyers market to find a couple good options, have two guys on the hook both $6000 going to pull trigger this weekend.

1. 2012 Summit sp 163 etec w can, bag, fuel caddy, 2900km.
2. 2014 Rmk pro 163 bone stock other than a fuel rack 2700km.

Not sure which way to go, kind of leaning summit.
