Urgent - Proposed Southern Alberta Closures

Some big changes are planned for southern Alberta. No doubt this will spread throughout Alberta if these proposals go through.

SOUTH SASKATCHEWAN REGIONAL PLAN

Status: Planning and Consultations Underway
The first and second phases of public consultation are complete as of December 21, 2012. During the third, final phase of consultation, the Alberta government will invite the public, stakeholders and municipalities to offer input on the draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. Refer to Public Consultations for information on consultation sessions.


Recreation and Tourism • Develop a better understanding of recreation and tourism preferences.
• Develop an all-season land-and-water-based recreational trail system.
• Develop and implement a user-pay system to help fund recreational development, management and infrastructure.
• Limit motorized recreation to designated areas and trails to protect wetlands and other habitats
• Maintain and enhance public access to recreational water bodies.
• Expand the supply of recreational opportunities, including destinations, attractions, facilities and infrastructure, and serviced and un-serviced camping.


HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOU AS AN OFF ROAD MOTORCYCLIST?
In phase 2 workshops proposals to achieve the above objectives were as follows:
• Limit motorized vehicles to only .5% of the total land base in the South Saskatchewan region ( 410 sq. kilometers )
• No motorized vehicles allowed on any lease lands
• No motorized vehicles allowed near rivers or other water sources such as river valleys and lakes
• No motorized vehicles allowed in the back country of the eastern slopes or in upper elevations
• Close the Castle area to all motorized vehicles
• Limit motorized vehicles to lower designated trails in the Crowsnest area, Race Horse creek area, Dutch Creek area, Old Man area and Livingston area
• Maclean Creek and Porcupine Hills would have designated trail systems for motorized vehicles that would be under constant review
• Random camping would not be allowed anywhere and only a few designated camping areas would be set up

We need to let government know we are not in favor of more land closures and land restrictions for off road motorcyclists. The third phase will start in May, 2013 so action must be taken now to ensure you and your children have riding areas available in southern Alberta in the future.

I've seen this kind of thing before, other side of the border from this area, I always find it strange that it seems the gov has already gone through a number of consultations before it actually comes to light with the public it affects. Anyway issues around Mclean creek have been coming up for years, so this was bound to happen. Thing is special interests groups that have stakes in the area have been working on this for along time, and occasional users are usually the last to know what these special interest groups have been up too. All I can say is get your 2 cents in there or you might find the only thing your riding in the back country east of the border has got four legs.

Sadly even though we can get thousands of signatures online, its likely to be thrown out as if it were a hamburger wrapper.

Your right Tyler. Form letters or petitions are not going to work. Do what Tyler said contact your MLA and get active. Read what the plan says and respond to it in YOUR own words BUT be polite and respectfull or it also will hit the junk pile

Background:
The Government of Alberta is actively working on a land use framework for the South Saskatchewan River Basin to support effective and sustainable use of the land by all users. Information on this process is available here:


RMDRA has actively engaged the Land Use Secretariat and provided feedback and advice regarding access for all OHVs and particularly ORM use and access. In cooperation with other Southern Alberta ORM and OHV groups including Lethbridge Motorcycle Club, Crowsnest Quad Squad, and Alberta Off Highway Vehicle Association (AOHVA) we met with the Land Use Secretariat and the Assistant Deputy Minister to advocate for sustainable OHV and ORM access within the region. During that meeting RMDRA was offered the opportunity to host a consultation to discuss the Draft Plan.

THE DRAFT PLAN:
Release of the Draft of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan is expected September 18, with private and public consultations planned throughout the fall months. When released, a copy of the Draft document will be placed in this thread for downloading and discussion.

This is a great opportunity to have a direct audience with representatives of the Provincial Government and engage productively on achieving the access we need to grow Off Road Motorcycling. Please tell your friends and come out in force to strengthen our voice in the land use planning process!

After discussion with the Land Use Secretariat, we agreed it will be far more valuable to discuss specific plan content and thus decided to delay our consultation meeting to October 17, 2013.
