Someone should lobby* government to have part* of our registration and insurance for our machines to go toward it..........I mean we all have to pay these things it's only fair to have a portion go to help with trail development and sustainability.if the business of insurance and registries were provincial instead of private we would have a bigger voice with this issue........just my $0.02

i think a casino night would be a lot of fun for individual clubs. Also a raffle of some sort is cool and silent auctions. Generally peeps like to party so a hall party/casino, raffle slash auction could be a big night for the snow angels. Or split it up and have a summer bbq and a winter casino.
It's unfortunate that the money we pay to register our machines does not go to funding trails and riding areas. thats what is supposed to happen with vehicle registration, the monies collected are used for road construction, maintenance and repair.
I register 7 recreational vehicles every year.
I get the whole not wanting government involvement and such, but unfortunately the government is the only body with regulatory powers to issue penalties for non compliance. It's often talked about the hassle that volunteers get when collecting trail fees, this is because legally they have no form of enforcement.
A portion of fines levied for ATV infractions should be put towards education and trail maintenance, we all agree (well 95% of us anyway) that helmets should be manditory so introduce a helmet law and all fines collected should be pumped back into the sport.
Governments have all become way too quick to impose increased taxation, user fees etc... where all the moneis go into general revenue and us as a public have become way too accepting of this fact. Each tax and fee was introduced with a purpose unfortunately very rarely does it work as it should.
ATV's are so popular now that Alberta parks and recreation could have a separate department dedicated to motorized recreation and funded thru registration fees and fines which would concentrate on trail construction and maintenance, and enforcement of proper trail ettiquete.
Right now it is my understanding that our registration fees for ATV's ends up with the department of transportation who's infastructure is off limits to recreational users.
Nothing against fundraising and such but it burns my azz that legally I have to register and insure my machines in order to take them off my own property yet I see very little if no other benifit other than self preservation and protection.
Bogger you are on the right track for sure. You are smarter than some think. IN the PERFECT world that is how it should work. USA gets some gas tax money back to help fund maintence but not here. User pays but gets it in the end result. All enjoy the results from paying.
Now the BIG Picture.
What if the province added a $50.00 surcharge dedicated to TRAILS on all your OFFROAD licience plates?? $50 is steep but OKThat would add up to over 2,000,000.00 a year to trails. Sounds OK?? Or not??? Money to go to trails.
Now the kicker to our nards. All trail users will benifet from this money. ALL USERS xcountry skiers,hiking,dogsleds,horses,birdwatchers,rollerbladers,etc etc. Still OK??? this is fine so long as other users don't try to keep motorized off Oh and summer and winter motorized. As far as we know yet. They still dont know how it will all work.
Seems this is the formula our government is looking at. Still OK???
What is some feedback from you the users that will be paying for their use and improvement of trails?
