Any thoughts on why my 05 800HO is using way too much oil. I am running Amsoil interceptor. It is using about 13.5:1 I have the adjustment down to nill and the pump looks like it is closing when you let off the throttle

Different viscosity's of oil will run through the pump at different levels of usage. Amsoil is known as a "thinner" viscosity oil. That may be your problem?

Thanks snopro Do you think it would be that big of a difference bewteen that and BRP syn oil? I started to tear it down to do a top end and everything is just dripping If an oil pump goes it should starve for oil right?

I think the BRP oil is thicker when it pours. Don't rule out your cable though. It is not uncommon for them to fray and this will cause the pump to stay open abit using more oil.

Would I have to pull the oiler off? Cable off? Whats the best way to tell?

The best way would be to unhook the cable from the pump. Then cycle your cable and see if its sticky. If you do it with the cable still hooked up sometimes the pump arm will not come back all the way. This is normal when the engine is not running.

Cool I will give it a try tomorrow. I thought it was funny to see the cable adjusted all the way down. The last guy must have had a problem and got rid of it

My buddies 05 rev does the same thing, it just chugs the oil, makes it real easy to find him in the woods. Just look for the smoke above the trees! I will pass on the info about the cable.

It will be interesting to know what you find. I just got an 04 800 and I'm having the same problem except mine is running at 20 to 1. I installed a new cable because the old one was starting to fray and adjusted it all the way to nothing. I am running brp mineral oil and i don't see any leaks in the garage.

It seems like my spring is shot. I can cycle the cable and pump and still push pump closed with screwdriver. Cables seem to be fine. Anyone ever installed an aftermarket oiler?

Don't be fooled by the pump arm not coming all the way back when the engine is off. this is normal. If the pump arm does not come all the way back down when the engine is running then you have a problem with the spring. Not really sure why the arm doesn't bottom out on its own when the engine is not running. Guess I should ask a BRP rep sometime. Lol.

I was just reading on Hard Core Sledder and a guy is saying that alot of the pumps springs wern't wound enough. I am doing my top end so I guess I will pull the engine and fiddle with the spring. You would'nt believe the oil residue over everything. Dripping out of the y pipe and off the raves. I am glad I'm doing it...the rings are gross. You might think that with the amount of oil it uses the rings shouldn't have flaked lol. What eles would you do to the engine while I have it out. It has 2950k

I would just inspect your end seals and maybe check your connecting rods for play when changing out the piston's. The only way to check the crank is to do a complete dissasembly and check your mains but it should still be good at that mileage.

Thanks for all the advice. Pulled engine No rough spots. Rings where shot...glad I listened to my Son and didn't go for that last ride. Pretty predictable 3000k for a top end. He also said that the fail safe for the pump is to dump more oil, in other words when the pump is worn out it pumps the max. Make sense?

Pistons look really good. Cylinders are great also except for a few aluminum deposits. There is the typical carbon build up on the top of the pistons but the head is clean except the oil build up...feels like a teflon fry pan lol Is there any easy HP gains to do while the engine is out?

Put a Dynoport or Crankshop single pipe on it and an MBRP can. Really smartens it up.

Yep have them. Does a y pipe make much difference? What about porting or polishing. Is it throwing $ away. I have heard that the 800HO's are already good
