Naw even a NP208 lives at highway speeds.... so that 81 Chev will probably be okay too. A 203 is 100% fine as it's full time and the only one I have heard caution about is a 205.

Any manufacturers new trucks will survive just fine living in 4 hi.... If they didn't think so the owners manual would not mention it and allow warranty coverage doing so.

I think it's dumb most of the time, but whatever makes you all warm and fuzzy.

It's hard to tell if your serious or not, but I've heard many people say this to. Same with "you have to stop before putting it in 4 wheel". Well I'm here to tell you I've never replaced a transfer case in any of my vehicles ever. The 1997 gmc half ton has 360 000km, and has been slammed into 4wd at 100km/hr and then drove for 5 hours.... Many times.

Even in todays 4x4s. Look in your owners manual and it will have a maximum speed for 4wd.

Sorry, no they don't. I went and got my trucks owners manual and it's only warning is to stay away from prolonged periods of time on clean dry pavement as it "may" cause drivetrain wear. Beyond that it recomends the use of 4hi for situations such as snowy or slippery roads. This covers NV 241, 243, 246, 261 and 263 t cases.

And yes, I know how a t case works so please don't try that angle. The offset of ratio's between the front and rear diff and generally good enough to keep the rear from overcoming the front...... Unless it has an auto one like the 246 where on my Ram anyhow my front and rear diff ratios matched.

The only transfer case failure I have ever seen was a friends truck when it relatively new and happened while on pavement. Thing was it wasn't the t-case that actually failed though...... the center pin in the spiders worked it's way out of the gears, caught the edge of case and exploded... while in 4wd. And yes warranty covered it knowing full well the truck was in 4 wheel drive.

You're a lot more likely on a NVG 246, 261 or 263 t case equipped truck to replace it after the pump in the bottom of the case wears through the side of it then ever seeing one actually pile up.

I can't believe I'm going to agree but the gf's 2006 blazer did have in the owners manual not to run it over 80kms in 4x4 but I have never seen it on a truck since then

Exactly my point. My old 86 GMC with a 208 said no more than 80km/hr....... but I ran it much passed that on rare occasion with over 450000 kms on it..... never had a problem. My 88-98's used to say it as well. Not anymore.

A fun fact is if launching at the track in 4hi just leave it there if you have any kind of real power. Generally guys break stuff shifting from 4 to 2 provided it will actually shift under WOT which some will not....... but even then not always.

4WD Plio....4WD..................don't think the manufacturer's are going to tell you the max speed of a 4WD in a 2WD book......

Is it hard on the t-case to leave a stop sign on an icy road in 4WD? Or better to save the t-case and just spin the back tires all winter..... :rolleyes:

And your rear diff's spider gears will look like mashed potato if you do that enough times. Especially if your Titan in an 04-06 model. The 07 up Dana 44's are a little tougher.

No i have no choice but to drive my old beast nicely in the winter, goodyear tires that are on it SUCK in the winter...!!

Ya your hi or something, maybe living in the past, I dont know, but you can easily go highway speeds in 4x4 for extended periods of time, drove from calgary to revy and back on the regular in 4x4 in a 1990 jeep cherokee to go snowboarding back when I was younger. That thing had 300000km+ on it and never once had a problem with it, all winter long it just kept on going at speeds anywhere from 80-110 km/h there and back. So Im guessing newer trucks should never have a problem

Whew, that's a relief!!! ...was starting to think the three of us might have to move south to avoid being lynched.
I guess I'm number 3.
But only cause I need to replace the front u-joints in my truck so my 4x4 is out of service right now!
But you can't train common sense. Slow Down!!

You're right. We can't. But I drove a 2wd truck for 6 winters. Never got stuck, or had any problems.

Growing up on the farm, and driving since I was 6, I've learned throttle control.

Yes, 4x4 is nicer, but there's nothing wrong with 2wd if you know how to drive.

Their not bad, if you have some weight in the back. Good tires help to though. 4x4 is just nice for that added security.

All I know is that my dad's last truck said not over 80kmh in 4wd, he drove with it on basically all winter anyways and did 2 transfer cases in it in 270,000km. Granted he was harder than hell on the truck.

I've always been told not to drive with it in 4wd on the highway unless you absolutely need it.
