I was blown away about 10yrs ago when my X's sister told me what she was making in tips a night at the pub she worked at, she was very average looking and dressed conservative and was very good at her job....she would average $300-400 a night and her best was $770 bucks.....she was making way more a month than I was at the time !!!!

I hate how it has become expected. To me a gratuity should be something you dont have to do, but do. Having said that though I am a generous tipper when the service and food are above average. I dont tip if Im not happy with the service. 10-15 for normal, and 20+ for better than average.

I don,t expect tips to just be given to me because im a server.I do over and above what my job is to make your meal or nite out more enjoyable and you say thank you with gratuity.

If you don't leave a tip then just don't expect the same attention next time.

So, i assume you tip the guy freezing his ballz off pumping your gas at -20, and the guy burning his
hands and arms changing the oil in your car and the tire guy that double checks that your rims are
torqued after you get a tire fixed?

I tip the gas jockeys. And hair dresser. Servers have to really chit the bed to not get a tip. But I refuse to tip when picking up my own takeout, or at subway, etc.

We were in Los Cabos a few weeks ago and the service everywhere was terrible. Not what I had expected
In the resort the bar maids would disappear for the first 15 minute of happy hour but would stop right a the top of the hour
The bars along the wharf were just as bad, trying to get a second drink and or the bill wait for 10 to 15 minutes

I think paying someone something extra for doing there job is stupid.
There are thousands of min. wage jobs out there so why does it make sense
to tip to just a select few?
In the early 90's I was a bouncer making min wage, my sister was a bar tender making
the same.I made $50 a night getting punched, kicked, spat on and getting my knee broke.
She made $50 a night + $100-150 in tips for opening beer bottles. Bouncers all took turns
re stocking coolers, taking bar tenders clean glasses ect ect. (above and beyond let's say) and
got paid zero percent of the girl's tip's.
So, there is my:twocents:

If you are good at your job your reward is you get to keep your job.
If you are not you get fired. If you are superior to all of your co worker's
you get a raise from your employer for bringing in more revenue.
That's the way the world works.

I agree but I had to fix it just a little!

In my head
From what I have been reading there is a movement afoot to get rid of tipping. Altogether or have it included in the bill at a set percentage. 16% seems to be the determined point. Many people upset with the whole tipping thing and apparently there are not too many countries left where it is the norm. People are fed up and demanding change. Canada is on the tail end of the change.

Oh, and look at your bills carefully. Some restaurants are making the change to a set percentage. Many people getting caught adding another tip as no one tells them the tip is already included.

I've spent some time in countries where tipping is not allowed. Employees are paid a decent wage. These employees "want" and "appreciate" their good paying (and respected) jobs. I can tell you it was some of the best, most amazing service I have ever received/seen.

According to the ATB Albertan's spend the most on eating out compared to every other province in Canada. I don't think the restaurant owners are hurting.
