i have been seeing alot of guys with XP's talk about doing a top end somewhere in the 3-4000km range.
My question,is it a rule of thumb to do a top end on any sled with 3-4000kms?
I know eventually that every sled will need it but sounds like XP's more than others.I realize every sled will need a top end at sometime...
Are the m8's any better than the XP?
Thanks in advance

your pushing it once you get over 3,000km it seems like it on the rotax's.

i made it 4,000km and compression was alright. didnt really feel like getting stuck out in the backcountry so in came a new top end (preventive maintenance)

3000km? . should be able to do 5000+ on any properly maintained rotax. i do mine every 5000. running the proper oils and using proper warmup procedures greatly inccreases the life. many i do at 5000+ dont even need it but its just one of those things thats not worth it to have fail.

the xp i have in the shop right now has 2000km and needs a top end...i kept telling him to let it warm up..go figure...

Gotta agree there maxwell. The first big bore I bought was a 700cc and the dealer told me that no matter what you see anyone else do, always warm that thing up and if you start it even just to move it let it run till it's warm so as to dry the cyls. as rust prevention because you pull in moisture.; it's always worked for me. As for oil i have always run mineral oil on break-in then anything goes after that; syn or semi-syn or mineral as long as there is some ash in your mineral oil it's good oil as the ash helps in running cooler cylinder walls.

Good warm up lets the moving parts, bearings pistons and cylinders expand evenly without sustained load on the motor. This will save your motor.

Have 4000 km on my one semi-stock motor and tore it down to measure clearances, spec on cylinder wall is 0.0035 and I was at 0.0038, wear limit is 0.0043, I only run mineral oil at 32:1 and I always let things warm up completely, and don't gas it wide open until I've had a couple kms on the trail.

You don't get the full smoke effect when it is hot though, which from all the trucks I see running around, the more smoke, the more power right? :p:p

HAHAHA Im so picky with my sled that I actually pull mine off of the deck by hand, so I can check it over before starting and dont immediately have to put the poor thing into reverse
