A great post. I have had very similar experiences with my family. I have 2 daughters and a wife that I love to ride with. Some of my best memories of riding are with these 3 beautiful people. I hear you on the "cold rides home", I've been on a few of those too and they were almost always caused by my mouth being in gear way ahead of my noggin :d

So awesome Frock! I do love hearing the men's perspective!
Yup I too know those rides home.. I was the natural air conditioning in our truck usually inspired by the question, "WHY DID YOU HIT THAT TREE?"

I woke up in the morning and said to myself.. "Trish, today you will find the largest tree and hit it WOT".. not... lol

This is a great post! Thank you for sharing that article. My girlfriend has grown up on sleds like myself, but this will be her first year riding in such large mountains and great snow depths, like BC has to offer. She will be moving to Alberta to live with me. She has seen the pics and vids of my trips to the mountains and she is already talking of the new mountain sled she wants lol. I will try my hardest this season, to keep this article in mind, whille we shed the snow in BC together. Hopefull to experience the "Rich rewards".

Excellent article MOMMA! My wife has been my riding partner for years, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Kinda pisses me off to see a couple riding that the significant other has no patience, and has put their sweetheart on a machine they wouldn't ride themselves. In my house, sweetie's sled is as new as mine or newer, gets set up for her weight and riding preference, and she gets a bunch of "atta girl"s, especially at the beginning of the season to boost confidence. Hopefully your article is made into a "sticky", so all can have a read...

My wife rides all the time with us and she is usually the only female of the group. She has put many men to shame over the years and we have certainly had some serious scraps. My wife told me one day she would like to ride with some of the Betties just to be able to ride with some other women. Are you guys doing a laddies ride this year anywhere.

Pretty sure we can hook a sista up ;) LOL

Trish will have some rides in Nelson area, I have rides in Golden/Radium...and there's other rides/clinics in the works for next year in different locations. All with the intent of getting more women on sleds and hooking up those that already ride with other likeminded peeps.

Ya good luck with that

You know what.. fair enough.. riding with your significant other is not for everyone. Some men see it as time away from Wife/kids/stresses... I can totally respect that.

You don't HAVE to ride with your wife/girlfriend... but in the event that she truly did want to go riding.. it would be nice for her to be able to find other people to ride with. I rode with a group of guys before My now husband entered the picture. They were AWESOME and I love them dearly.

No one is saying you have to ride with your woman... understand that.. for those people who would like to, here are some resources...

Shred on man.. May your grin be big and the pow be deep

Trish

PS.. and I secretly have a pet peeve... I HATE seeing a woman doubled... it is Super hard on the dude.. no fun.. and that woman needs to see what she's missing.. obviously she wants to be out in the snow... so Lets get her on her own ride.. more fun for everyone.

An excellent read. Thanks
My gf is really bugging me to take her sledding she does quad with us and is a really good rider but I am positive that she is not fully aware of what a mountain ride entails. It beats the hell out of me most days and I definetly know a full day of deep riding will be tough on her as well.
We will probably rent or borrow a machine for her for the first while and if she decides she wants to stick with then we will find her a sled to call her own. And if she doesn't enjoy it like she thought she did, it looks like there will be plenty of spa and massage days for her in the future while I am riding!

Nice! She can do it!! I find quadding fun...but nothing even remotely close to how I feel about sledding. I'm 'not young' or very big or strong, LOL...I always think that if I can handle it, anyone can! Get in touch if you're looking to hook up with some other gals for her to learn with or if you guys need sledding buddies in the Golden/Radium area. We'll be holding a few Betties rides for the new riders to mix with some girls that have a few rides under their belts that can help them learn and gain confidence as well as some demo rides for women to try different sleds out.

I can't wait to hear see her get addicted :D

Every wife / gf should at least be given the opportunity.. and a FAIR opportunity to try it out, if there interested. So that doesn't mean sticking her on a short track so she's stuck all day and gets no where (we arent usually throttle happy in the beginning).. nor on the 1000 163" machine or monster turbo.. but something that's middle ground and will at least give her a taste. Also not extremely intimidating areas, or leaving her on her own when she's stuck. I've met a fair amount of guys who have made it there goal to make there womans first ride out the worst experience of their life that they never want to go again ie wrong sled and leave them stuck on there own for an hour or two. Its dis-heartening to me personally. I love riding with my man and sledding isnt the same without him there. Besides the more time you put in with her developing her skills the more she grows in turn the more u can push back and hit the big stuff and have just as much fun. Its not hard to find areas with challenging terrain for both rider types/abilities. And you'll certainly get a good laugh along the way as she stumbles falls and screws up. Just remember sometimes you'll need to pick her back up and re-install the confidence to go again. I dunno I just wish more men would give there women a chance. And if she's not interested than thats cool too. Its not for everyone. She may even be like my sister-in-law. One or two short trips a year and she's pleased. Usually a holiday which then she'll take one or two days out along w the other girls so that the guys still get some 'boys riding' time in.

All I have to say about comments of leaving her at home is "Wow, really?" I think you are missing the boat in a big way. I'm not saying that mountain riding is for everyone (a lot of guys, too, based on the carnage and sometime poor riding choices I've seen in the past). Is my wife Bret Rassmussen or Chris Burandt? No, and I don't expect her to be, either. Prior to her knee and shoulder injuries, I've seen her embarass a lot of men on the hill by executing very technical lines. Only reason she went back to a 600 this year was weight and ease of handling - the rotator cuff will be a slow healing process.
Is mountain riding physically demanding? Yes it is, and I know it the day after every ride when I roll out of bed - but don't sell her short saying " she won't be able to handle it" I personally know at least 3 female riders that can make 80% of men look stupid in the hills, so it isn't all about strength and testosterone, boys. Unfortunate that the attitude is present, cause if you enjoy your spouse's company, you would be willing to have some patience while she learns - you all were "green" riders once... just sayin
