News Release - AEP Public Survey reveals overwhelming input against the proposed Bighorn Park. LoveYourTrails has received the complete results of the RAC (Recreational Advisory Council) survey conducted by the Alberta Government this spring. Provided to us by the AOHVA’s (Alberta Off-Highway Vehicle Association) Freedom of Information Request to the Government – we analyzed the full 713 pages of over 7000 public input responses to the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan. Of responses specific to creating a Bighorn Park, an overwhelming 85% were opposed and only 15% supported. Of the entire 7000+ surveys responses, 54% clearly stated they do not support a Bighorn Park, any further restrictions, and were notably upset with process and conduct. Less than 10% of comments were in support of turning the Bighorn Public Land Use Zones in to Bighorn Park, or implement further protections.
LoveYourTrails conducted a Bighorn Recreation survey this spring, and our results were similar. 74% were opposed to a Bighorn Park, with only 8% in favor. 18% supported only if all current activities and access remained the same.
We hope this Government will respect the majority input and the many recreational organizations supporting our backcountry activities, and keep the Bighorn Backcountry as the Public Land Use Zone for all Albertans to responsibly enjoy. This designation already ensures protection of the environment, while allowing responsible and sustainable use.
LoveYourTrails is a multiuser group supporting diverse recreational activities and organizations representing responsible enjoyment of the backcountry. Alberta is a province of diversity, and whether access to backcountry enjoyment is by foot, hoof or by motor - there are solutions to ensuring sustainable enjoyment of the environment for future generations.
We all love the environment, and want to preserve ALL Albertans access to responsibly enjoy it.
