Wow! I really appreciate where I ride after reading all this! No more trips to the busy areas for me.

We had 6 full cans taken from the box of the truck in Corbin one day. Funny thing was that one was full of methanol as my buddy is an operator so always has a can for freeze ups. I bet what ever they poured that into didn't last long.
Hopefully they poured it in their truck!

very few and far between if you think about it. Your chances of getting ripped off in everyday life situations is greater IMO.

I agree. Ever since my kid was born I've been asking myself if I really need to be doing this? I love sledding but the costs are a lot higher and there are alot more undesirable people out there. The crappy roads, and worry about your gear when Hearing about guys ripping others off makes me wonder.

Its pretty sad to hear all these coments about quitting sledding because some one had a 100 dollar jerry can get swiped. Why is it assumed that because a person that rides a sled is expected to all of a sudden be some hi and mighty being. Outside of sledding they could be the biggest prick thief around and just happened to get into sledding. Its like the guy everyone knows that is an as$hole when drunk. Take a closer look at them next time. Chances are their an as$hole that just happens to be drunk. I have had 2 kids over the last 5 years and can't wait till the day when I can take them up the mountain to meet all the incredible people that ride for the pure love and freedom of sledding. If we get something swiped we will deal with it then. It will for surely not make me want to quit riding.

Interesting, i've been sledding since the mid 70s. Actually bought my first sled in 1976 new but started on loaner sleds in 74 in Quebec. I moved to BC in 76 and tookup the sport sledding.
In all the years i've been doing this i have never had issues with being ripped off, especially in the hills. Like someone already mentioned, there is a CODE sledders pretty much go by and i've witnessed it.
But today people are not like that, they buy sleds on credit, take up a sport that they honnestly cannot afford and steal from others to gain what they cannot afford.
6 years ago while i was guiding a group from the U.S., we got back to the vehicles and some aszwhipe ripped off my loading ramp for my deck. The American sledders helped me loadup and it sure was an eye opener on the type of new breed out there.
I have heard of few getting their fuel ripped off but never experienced it my self. Though i carry my fuel now no if or buts from stories i have heard....too bad, it honnestly was never that way......in the old days.

hit the nail on the head there. new generation of disrespectful pukes.... and I am with timmy on that one too! 20L on the hill should easily be a fiddy dollar bill!

Guess ill use my yellow diesel jerry can from now on. May stop someone from stealing gas.

Or someone steels it for his diesel truck. Then see what happens.. haha

I would agree with moyie, for lots its not the single incident, its the icing on the cake. Lots of people here on the east side of the rockies have fast paced lives and lots going on, hard to get away, more time away from family, more expensive and less quality riding when you look at it. Guys just want to ride, not piss around with all the BS instead. $100 jerry can? That's expensive, maybe you can afford to lose one a week. This week its a jerry, next week its a trailer and a sled. Sledding is a big investment, time and money. Some guys might drive for 12 hrs to sled for 8. Some of us don't mind it if you love sledding that much, but for others, that time can be better spent and they just aren't as passionate about sledding. Some guys get injured and just can't do it anymore, or go through a divorce and can't afford it anymore, having something swiped or a bad experience on the hill is just the excuse they get to use to bail out. Its not up to us to judge.

Its personal choice, everyone makes their own for their own reasons, lots of reasons we don't know about, and people shouldn't be called pussies (or otherwise) for any decision they make.

I would be interested to put an age, years of mountain sledding experience and family status to the guys that expect thier personal belongings to get stolen and are fine with it. I bet majority of them have less than 20 years of sledding experience traveling from Alberta to BC to sled, living paycheck to paycheck and have never had near death experiences making thier family 150% their priority. That was me 5, 10, 15, 20, 25+ years ago, not now.

43, 18, wife, 18 yr old daughter, born and raised BC boy, my $ none of your business. Avalanches claimed the lives of two of my best friends, one we were there to dig out. Run a memorial for 9 years for him, raised thousands for his two kids. Family and friends come first, thats why we play together. Had both my brand new sleds stolen this year, did not expect it, and definitely NOT ok with it, but still got my stoke. Just no snow.
They give me life, these mountains all around me, which spills over into making me happy and more productive which my family loves.
Stuff happens, can't let them win. Now I fully understand life takes us in different direction, of course things I was into I have moved on from. I get that, I used to be into fly fishing, then I went and caught a tyee, no more baby trout for me, but I didn't give up because someone stole my tackle box( they did, dam it) I just focused different. To say that stuff is stolen so I quite is a poor example to give in my opinion.

Priorities change for people, why judge that! Some people have a lower tolerance to risk than others. You used to fly fish for trout, and went on to bigger fish.
I'm 35 and have been sledding on the hills for 8 years but been sledding since I was 10.
Like I said I love sledding, but really looking forward to camping this summer with my family.

I was not judging him, I answered his questions. Which part was me judging him? Geez he stereo types saying it's only young newbies with no money that do not care if our stuff gets stolen. I was pointing out that it is not true. I said I get peoples priorities change, 100% percent. If guys interests change or life changes fair enough, but to be run off by scum bag loser thieves, that in my opinion , which I am allowed, is a weak reason to stop sledding. Reread my reply, the top of my post was his question. I know I can get typing but on this one I was answering his question and giving my opinion, which is what this site is, peoples opinions. If no one wrote what they felt what's the point of snow ad mud.
Man nerves are on edge I hope it f'n snows soon so I don't need to keyboard roop anymore. Gary

No you misunderstood me, I didn't say you in particular were judging him in general. That's why I did not quote you.

Judging someone's reason to make a personal choice is what I was referring to,it's their choice to make. I did use your example of fishing as an example, so I hope u didn't take my reply personal.
The thefts may be a small part of the bigger picture.

And yes I do agree, it's really needs to snow!!

OK..

This thread went from people losing jerry cans to giving up sledding/..

I am pretty sure it's not about the original subject, but rather a change in life. No need to drag this out to be a subject on petty theft issues.
