Stock nytro vs sidewinder

This is what I did to make my sled work for me;
270 Power Trail tune (works awesome)
Cold air intake
Made my own free flow exhaust, that is NOT loud (saved 12Lbs)
Put on the vertical steering post (Big improvement over the Nytro style that SUCKED BIG TIME!)
Geared up from 21-52 to 22-50 (they are geared too low stock)
Did my own custom clutching (Couldn't get the Daltons to work for my riding style)
I have SlyDog skis and put the stock Yamaha hoops on them (Nite and day better than the stockers)
Made my own running board inserts to evacuate snow and put clear rock guard tape on the tunnel where my feet are to stop snow from freezing on.
Cut my seat down (I have short legs) so you can jump from side to side WAY easier.
Put Frog skin material over the front grill to stop snow from jamming in the grill to the inter cooler.
Front bush bumper
Made my own shorter snow flap
Put on the yamaha belly pan to protect the chain case.
Put on the Ice Age Elevate kit with Bomber rails and the rear scissor (Huge difference in handling and deep snow performance)
Put in an Earth X battery (Between that and the seat saved 14Lbs)
Modified the brake handle so its closer to the bars for riding with one finger on the brake.
Swapped out the big Arctic Cat throttle for an Apex throttle. (Much shorter throw and the thumb warmer now get HOT, not just warm like the factory one)
Have a handle bar bag and the good Arctic Cat tunnel bag so I don't have to wear a pack sack (Makes riding way better)
Put the shocks off my 18' Cat on it so I have Lock Out and that works FANTASTIC when climbing for keeping the front down.
Painted the inside of the window yellow and put on a decal
Painted spindles, rails and old skid lid to match (Decals and paint add 20HP right there LOL)

So this is a lot of mods, lots of the stuff was on my 18' cat that I took off and sold the Cat. I like modding my stuff and keeping it look relatively stock looking. LOL

By the way this sounds like I spent a Sh@t tonne of money, but the truth is, I got a screaming deal on the sled used with less then 400Km, it had a few of the items I listed, I made lots of the items myself, repurposed items from my 18' Cat and bought the rest. That being said I have less than 14,000 into this sled the way it sits. New Factory Ski-doo Turbo is 22,000 and I have rid'n them and they are good, but NOT THIS GOOD.......................

Sounds pretty awesome. Yeah I’m pretty crafty when it comes to building sleds. Lots of trading and used parts. That’s why I started powder coating myself. Pretty easy to make things look new again.

I feel I’m on the cusp of a bargain build. ;)

I have a friend who rode Nytros for years, stock and mcx 180. He’s a flat lander so all his were 144’s. He bought a new 141 2.25” lug viper in 2015 with a mcx 190 and loves it. As you know with vipers/sidewinders, you get ****ty AC steering systems and overall maybe a less quality build, but better handling and balanced machine than the nytro. I think it will all depend on your riding area and expectations. There are some great deals on used Nytros right now, have another friend who just picked up a mcx 270 174 Nytro for $3500 the other day. Good luck

that’s crazy cheap. Sad really the amount of money to build those sleds ...and really they will out last any other brand 10fold running big power all day long.

Yea I can't powder coat but I painted the rails, spindles and my old helmet to match with automotive urethane paint (I'm old semi retired on a budget) It looks better in real life than the pic. I kid the young bucks and tell them "If it don't go, chrome it" Trying to syke them out so I don't have to work so hard to keep up. :nono:

if you're looking for cheap, whats wrong with an apex? I would take an apex over a nytro any day. Nytros are horrible to ride, I couldn't get off of it fast enough

Yeah don’t want to go that far back. Guessing a 190mcxviper with a 36” would be the most logical choice for the best handling Yamaha excluding the sidewinder. Does the viper feel that much different than the SW?

I think if I did get a sidewinder again would have to be this one. The best looking one besides the one I built. Lol

Ive been trying to find a 2019 to replace my 2017, there is one out west on the island but they want $20,7095.04 out the door. Apparently the fact that its 2 years old now doesn't matter and that is dealer cost...

I've rode alot of yammys, my dad rides a viper with a 180 mpi kit and they work great for what they are. Don't need a different track or suspension, gauges, fuel or anything like that, just ride it hard.

If your looking at turbo yammys its such a preference thing, a machine I like is probably not one most would like, and so on. They can be setup so different from one another its crazy.

thanks...honestly I would just buy a sidewinder right now but just have some other things on the go and looking for something lower cost. Laying low this year with the family rides.

I picked up a crane scale to try to get a better idea on these weights. Not the most expensive one in the world but I think it’s close.

2015 Viper 162 MPI turbo. Powerclaw 2.6 track. Yamaha accessories front bumper.

630lbs

Same Viper with MPI lightweight can. Conquer 280 track. BDX super lightweight brake rotor.

612.5lbs

2018 Sidewinder 153. 2.6 powerclaw. Mbrp race muffler. Viper steering. Arctic Cat extruded boards. I can’t imagine the new steering added more than two pounds. Maybe 1/2 pound added for the boards. About 9 lbs taken off with the muffler.

636lbs

2008 Apex MTX 162. Stock. It was there so we weighed it.

684lbs

All weights are packed full of fuel. Tool kit.

Lifting Straps and clevis weigh 5.5lbs.

The sidewinder still has factory air box etc. whereas the viper has a CAI. Maybe 10ish lbs.

My 15 viper 162, 3" power claw, baker rear arm , raptor front shocks, boost it turbo, 36 inch front end, skinz seat, light weight battery , carbon hood mod is 620 lbs ready to ride

What really throws a mind fack into some people is I had a 2012 pro, boost it turbo, baker rear, 174 x 3, and full of fuel, oil, spare belt ready to ride it was 606lb.

Yeah it’s really not much difference. Just the balance for the 4stroke motor weight.

Heaviest part of the sled will be where the rider is. Using a set of 4 scales (Think intercomp or equivalent, not bathroom stuff), I was able to get the balance of my King Cat to 47% front and 53% rear (with rider aboard & full of fuel, etc). Suspension tuning goes a Very long way in how these machines handle, most are way undersprung on center track shock...

I still ride my tapex and a 190 mpi viper soon to become a boost it ho. Being I have 50km of trail each way to the ungroomed my sleds ride very flat. I sidehill some but not into doing it all day. If the snow is really deep not much ever goes where the tapex will go. But I know you know this. The viper is a great sled and with some mild mods it will be as capable as the winder.

I put a ton of Nytro miles on over the years but I couldn’t see myself going back to one. They feel so planted great in the ultra deep but terrible many days. Even the viper just didn’t have the agile feel. I loved my sidewinder if your going to ride a 4 stroke it has to be the one. That 18 cat sold me on today’s 2 smokers again they are just to fun not to ride.

I agree 100% on the sidewinder being the best riding 4 stroke to date ......the main reason I was leaning towards a nytro or viper was if I don’t get out a bunch this year and it sits ...oh well...there’s nothing more I hate than walking past a sled and not using it. Figure just pick up something cheap. See how the winter goes and maybe pickup a sidewinder next year.

Also there’s isn’t an abundance of sidewinder choices. They seem to be a hot commodity lately.

I like a project...especially taking something used and making it the best it can be. Satisfying
