we had a pit dug at the ride with chris brown clinic last weekend. Around 4" below the surface was the worst layer I have ever seen. The crystals were almost an inch long and had almost zero structural integrity. This snow is going to overwhelm it. It is real bad anywhere that got more than a few inches of snow in the last week.

If you're on Facebook and not already following the CAC, it's a great way to stay on top of all the bulletins and blog posts. We generally 'share' them whenever they are posted to try and spread the word...

Here's the link...

Same here in the Flathead, ice crystals about two inch's long and now more than two feet of snow on top. My son saw six slides start last weekend and this ones going to be worse. I'll sit this one out.

I agree. We will be tapping back this weekend in order to lower our risk and consequence. I sure hope everyone plays safe. This kind of feels like the weekend of the Boulder slide. PLEASE be careful everyone.

Sure hope word gets out somehow, hate to lose anybody this weekend.:nono:

The club should post this in all locations at the Poker Run this weekend. I've seen a lot of guys down there, playing where they shouldn't be, in High Avy conditions...and big crowds are bad for making people not use logic:)

Valemount has a drag race and poker run this weekend ! Great way to resist the temptation of the hills and win some cash to boot !

Valemount also has Zacs Tracks Avy courses this weekend that are NOT FULL. Would be a GREAT weekend to get some Avy training and see how these weak layers fail in the field session!

We were out to the mountains 2 wks ago (Northern Rockies) and observed some of the biggest surface hoar we had ever seen. This surface hoar was approx. 3 inches long and wedge shaped, which tends to be very persistent and remains upright. I was NOT surprised to see that a SPAW was posted yesterday.....any new snow sitting on this extremely weak layer is just a disaster waiting to happen. I hope peeps understand how unstable the snowpack is right now, and chose to play in terrain that has no life or death consequences.

Good advice...we will ride but in safe low level terrain.

You are right. We see stupid stuff just about every time we go out. My biggest wish is that peeps who ride the backcountry get educated by taking an Avy course. I can guarantee that if all those who ride the backcountry took that course, we wouldn't see the bad mistakes we see. Please peeps....if you haven't taken a course, sign up. There is one coming to PG on the March 10/11 weekend too for anyone interested that lives in this area. Play safe out there....these conditions right now aren't anything to take lightly.

Hopefully there will be more signs posted, So far we have got 8cm of snow today in town, Can't imagine how much more there will be up in the hills.
Luckily the poker run route is away from any major play areas this year, might keep someone from starting a competition
Everyone enjoy your weekend and play safe.
