Sounds Like the Track Ratcheting.

Buddy's XP has developed a sound like the track ratcheting. We tightened the track and still have the noise. We looked in the chain case and thought we found the problem with a loose chain and a broken link. Replaced the chain and still have the noise. The drivers look not bad and the 2 wheel kit on the back looks fine.
Any ideas?

must be the chain or the drivers.

can you take a photo of the drivers?

is the chain properly adjusted?

its possible that from ratcheting the chain the gears may be damaged also.

how is the sled performing otherwise?

We haven't really want to ride it since we heard the noise, limped it back to truck. The chain is new and adjusted proper we believe and the gears looked good. I will see if we can get a pic of the drivers to post soon. There is wear on them but being extroverts you would think they would drive anyways proper. I just talked to someone that said maybe the drivers moved a bit so they weren't lining up in the track like they should. Hmmmm.

is the track rubbing the tunnel since its so close if your tracks not trued perfect it will rub

I had the same problem, turned out one of the suport brackets for the upper idler wheels was cracked. Could not really see unless you looked close but every time the suspesion unloaded it would seperate and make a heck of a noise....easy fix once the part showed up.

maybe check the chain tension again, had the problem in quartz. chain was finger tight, ran 50 ft and loosened up, retightened worked ok. will replace chain, may have bad link or something.

If the chain is good and the drivers are good then (your gonna think I'm crazy) put a new belt on it and test launch it if it's still doing it then I'd check your jackshaft as murm suggests.

Does it make the noise all the time or just under load - put it up on a stand and run it and see if you can locate the noise .

rail extensions? if so the long bolt that pushes the wheel back tight against the track is either bent or broke. makes a hell of a sound, sounds like the chaincase is hooped. sorry for the improper terminology.

Thanks for all the good ideas to look at. We haven't tried another belt yet and it only happens under load. I tried it in our icy parking lot and nothing and also nothing from hanging it in the shop. I punched it on some snow in a field and it made the racket right away so I took it back to the garage. Going to pull the skid out tomorw I think but will look at chain tension again also.

One thing that will also do that is the bushings on the primary. Take a good close look at the primary as it's running and make sure its running true.

We pulled the skid this morning and it looks fine but we saw a crack on the housing on the left hand of the tunnel where the driveshaft goes into the brake assembly. We start to pull the brake cover et off and saw som marking etc on the disc and looks like the disc is hitting something. We started to pull the chain case but it was being a handful. We couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come off because we had all the bolts off we think. Time was running out for today so we will look at trying to get it off tomorrow. We atleast think we have pinpointed where the issues is at the brake.

Is the upper bearing breaking out of the chain case,this happened to mine and the brake disc fell dowwn and was rubbing on the large bolt behind the chain case.Cause was the head of the bolt for the bottom chain case gear had broken off.

i had this noise a few rides back. tightened the track, didn't go away. tightened the chain and it was fine for a bit. one ride later the noise came back. i pulled the chaincase cover off and inspected. everything looked fine except the chain was loose again. tightned it. sound went away. another ride and it started again. pulled the cover off and the chain had about 50 broken links which started ripping the tensioner pad apart.


let us know what you're problem turns out to be, these sleds are a love-hate i tell ya

if Radical Rider's brake disc is on the same side as his chain case, he is not talking about an XP.

We finally got time today to finish pulling apart my buddy sled. It apears that the bearing is rough on the brake side of the drive shaft and that the inner alluminum bearing housing that goes on the inside of the tunnel on that side is broken in 3 spots. That is all that we can see wrong on the sled so we are hopeing to replace all the bearings on the drive axle and bearings on the skid and replace the broken piece inside the tunnel and hopefully everything will be fixxed.

Crowman, if the retainer is broken i would look to see what has broken it, like you said the bearing is rough and is this what caused it to break.
With it being broke it allows things to not line up and caliper moves to the outside.
I broke one installing track and couldn't get thinks to line up right without it.
Call dealer and order as i had to order it but only $18.00.
