Took me a long time to realize it, but the toothbrush is stuck into the electric brake breakaway switch. There is supposed to be a little cable connected from that breakaway switch to the truck hitch. *shudders*

And as for the upside down piece, I have always called that component the ball mount. The receiver is also known as a hitch - the part that holds the ball mount.

Driving downtown, and come across this... creative use for a toothbrush, Guy should get a Darwin Award for this safe work practice...

there's 2 ways to look at this Jason.......

1) hopefully the trailer doesn't disconnect from the truck and the brakes need activating..........

2) he's always got a tooth brush with him when he's taking his trailer somewhere

Sheeeeit, took me while to see what is wrong here but I got 'er figgered. If you look just below the tailgate handle, you can see an oval emblem. This nutcase was trying to pull something with a Ford!

Just to throw a question out after seeing all these mess ups. What is the proper length of chain to have? Mine are always crossed to act as a cradle. But would like to know how much length is needed to be safe?

The chains shouldn't drag on the ground and should be long enough that they won't bind when the trailer is fully jackknifed. Ideally, the cradle formed by the crossed chains should prevent the hitch from hitting the ground - apparently it's even law in a few states.

Towing A Trailer
When towing a trailer, you should allow more room between vehicles before entering into traffic. It will take you longer to reach the speed of the traffic flow because of the extra weight of the trailer. By the same token, it will also take you longer to stop so you should increase the following distance between you and the vehicle ahead.
Here are some other things to remember when towing a trailer:

  • A trailer must be registered and licensed before it can be used on the road.
  • If driving on multi-lane highways, remember that slower-moving vehicles should stay in the right-hand lane.
  • Plan your driving. Avoid situations that may require quick lane changes or unexpected stops.
  • If traffic builds up behind you, find a safe place to move over and let others pass.
  • Your trailer must have working taillights, brake lights and turn signals that are activated from the towing vehicle.
  • If you have a ball-and-socket hitch, you will also need safety chains as a secondary means of attachment. Chains should be crossed under the tongue of the trailer and correctly fastened. This applies to all trailers except fifth-wheel trailers.
  • If your trailer is equipped with a breakaway emergency supplemental braking system, make sure that the system is properly connected according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Adjust vehicle mirrors to clearly see traffic approaching from behind. You must use extension mirrors if the trailer is wider than the towing vehicle.

  • If you have a ball-and-socket hitch, you will also need safety chains as a secondary means of attachment. Chains should be crossed under the tongue of the trailer and correctly fastened. If chains are too long simply twist them till the proper length has been achieved. This applies to all trailers except fifth-wheel trailers.
  • If your trailer is equipped with a breakaway emergency supplemental braking system, make sure that the system is properly connected according to the manufacturer's instructions.If for some reason your supplemental braking system pin has been ejected, a tooth brush jammed into the slot should be suffice.
  • Adjust vehicle mirrors to clearly see traffic approaching from behind. You must use extension mirrors if the trailer is wider than the towing vehicle. Unless you own a dodge , your mirrors are permanently in the extended position.
  • If coming to railroad crossing, make sure your phone is fully charged so you can take videos and selfies if your trailer slides off the road and gets crushed causing you to end your weekend abruptly.
  • Two sleds on a half ton is perfectly fine as long as they are tied down properly with bungee cords or bailer twine with a good slip knot.
