Anyways....we had been to the USA dozens of times over the years with no issues...but last year we got the ol 3rd degree south of Creston headed for a day of shopping. THEN they run the numbers...and looky here: my ol Lady is a criminal! She pleaded guilty at 16 to possession of stolen property over a go 'round with her roomates who stole stuff from their work (clothes) and pinned it on her. At the time...knowing nothing better, the DA advised her to just plead guilty and pay the fine...no worries...so she did. NICE. Now she's a criminal. She's been saying "no charges, no convictions" at the border for years thinking that at 16 this didn't count. WRONG. She's really not a crook, LOL, BUT IN ANY CASE we can now not go to the USA. SO..............where can I take her besides Mexico. I hate Mexico. She wants to travel.....I'm quitting sledding for a year....where can I surprise her where we won't get turned away at the airport and costing me a zillion bucks? Winter...warm...tropical...cheap beer(for me)...that kinda place. Gracias all!

i think dominican as well but not sure i have the same issue but they have been letting me slide " so far" i tell them when i cross about it and they say ok just waiting cause one day it is going to happen. and a pardon is a royal pita. without the cost even attached to it.

knowing me I would apply for the pardon as you cant even fly direct to many tropical places without going thru the US. My friends went to Nicaragua last year and loved it and very cheap. But no direct flight from Western Canada that I am aware of (via Dallas Ft-worth). If you got time S.E. Asia is also cheap and hot.

a pardon is no longer an option. she has already been flagged, and the US doesn't recognize pardons. if the pardon was received first, before getting flagged, she never would have been flagged. and don't need a pardon anyway, what you need is a travel waiver from homeland security. i have a friend going thru this right now. they could care less that she has a pardon. so with that being said, make sure to fly somewhere not crossing the US either, cause if the plane gets diverted, you can be in big doo doo. cuba is good, really any caribean island is tough to go wrong with. thailand if you have a month is fantastic, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than mexico, but a long flight to get there

Yup. We've been looking into this. Since shopping now sucks in the US...this was our only reason to go there before...she's just not willing to pay the waiver $$$ just to "make an appearance on US soil". Not worth it.

X2 on this once you get caught at the border with a record a Canadian pardon is useless, need a US pardon and good luck with that. I am however suprised that a youth record showed up. I thought anything under 18 was sealed.

At 16 they can charge you as an adult apparently. The other noteworthy "detail"....when they charge someone with possession of stolen property, they often charge then with actually stealing that property. This was the case with my wife. Now...after pleading the "easy way" 20 um...plus years earlier...her adult record shows her guilty of possession and of theft under 1000 bucks.

Cuba sounds cool...wonder if there's direct flights?

The Yanks are effin stupid with this stuff. You'd think with their economy in the shambles it's in they would have a little leaway. We USED TO go down 2 or 3 times a year and I would blow 50 bucks on beer and cigars while she would spend literally THOUSANDS every time. Oh well.....

there are lots of places you can go! I've been to cuba, Jamaica, Belize, Peru, Brazil, Dominican, Costa Rica.... and theres lots of places in europe also.... so far my favorite is either Belize or Costa Rica... The people are awesome and theres tons of cool stuff to see and its cheap cheap cheap. they are also the two safest places ive travelled. I have a pardon now but i didnt before. and u can go direct flights from Edmonton, Calgary or Vancouver.

PS Peru Is awesome but holy crap its expensive cuz the flights are so far...

Same here. Need a travel waiver not a pardon. Pain in the butt. I got caught with a roach in 1986. 1/5 of a gram of hippy whisky. I even tried in court to beat it. But in those days they charged everyone no matter the amount. Mexico and cuba are my getaways for now
