Dudes & Dude-ettes,

I'm looking for sled skiing partners who are based out of the Calgary area, who are looking for the same. Ideally, most weekends (condition dependent) I'd like to burn turns in the cutblocks in the Cataract area, and over Fording on longer bigger days, with the odd trip south of the border, or west into BC.

I've been touring for years, and have just moved over to sled access for this season. It's tough finding partners, as the tree huggers, and the sled heads both don't get sled skiing...LOL!

I've got a 900 AC with a 163" and a 3 place ride-on-ride-off trailer. Just need some like minded, AST 1 certified strong skiers with their own machines... Let me know if you're interested!

Cheers,

Hello, My son and I live in Calgary and are both interested in Sled skiing. We have done a bit of sled skiing over the past couple years at Quartz Creek in Golden as well as Boulder Mountain in Revelstoke. I have had formal AST 1 training as well as lots of practice on commercial trips. We are both strong powder skiers but most of our back country skiing has been on Heli and snowcat trips. We find the biggest challenges of sled skiing are getting enough people involved to be safe and productive, attaching skis to machines and the challenge of finding that perfect slope with decent lines. I have thoughts on solving these issues and obvious joining up with you and others would solve part of the manpower issue. I don't know the Cataract Creek are from a skiing / sledding perspective. Obviously its not a great area from a total snowfall perspective but it is a bit closer to Calgary of course. 2 hours vs 3.5 to Quartz Creek. My son and I have a 2013 and 2014 Summit X. Lets talk further if you like. Have you talked to anyone else who has interest?

I also live in clagary I run 2x sleds. Our crew is 6 man crew we have been skiing together for 10-12 years. Majourity of us are avy certified and indulge in cat skiing every year.
I have been sled skiing now for 3 years. I have 2011 Summit rev xp 163" track with CFR rack on back. And my secondary sled is a 1000 summit x 2006. With CFR rack as well.

You need to have decent sled setup, with CFR racking or great strap rack, so your not messing around all day with your gear.
we primarily do day trips to Quartz, Hope Creek, Silent Pass or Some good riding in pass for sled skiing. Castle mountain is stellar but you need decent riders to make the climb.
Then you need decent riders who can tandom and climb then you can access sled skiing areas. Boulder in Revy is well known swell.

I would be interested in meeting up in next few weeks drop me a line when your heading out.
Ash

I sled/snowboard and have a few areas that see less sleds than quartz creek. so if your in golden, let me know as I don't have many friends who skin for turns.

Welcome to the insanity! I've been at the sled skiing operation for a few years, it is a lot of fun but the logistics are sometimes tricky. Like mentioned above a good rack is essential - I ended up modifying a CFR rack then building my own to get a streamlined fit with rockered skis. I highly recommend taking your sled out without skis (or ski boots) to get a feel for the machine for the first few days. Your best bet for reliable ski laps is a logging road and skiing down the between the switchbacks. If you just use the machine for touring access it can save you a lot of grief when the snow is deep and there is no base.

There are endless places to go skiing, PM me if you are looking for some ideas. By FAR the best time to go sled skiing is right after a catski operation closes and then you have highways to everywhere you want to go. First 2 weeks of april you want to have marked down on your calendar!

I'm in calgary and ski/snowboard/noboard Quite a bit, depending on how busy work is.
I'd be into some trips any times you guys go as a lot of my buddies just sled now and dont ski much anymore.
Most tandem days I do are at Gorman quartz or boulder. I'd rather day trip to fernie over cataract.
Got a 12 and 13 summit, truck with a deck, and a 2 spot trailer

I am a sled skier/border/split as well, and find it harder each year to get as many turns.

Would def be interested in doing some scoping closer to Calgary as day trips are easy to do. PM me.

Hey guys,

Thanks for responding to this thread. I hope to get out with some of you guys for some turns this season.

I'm going out to Cataract this Sunday to help the Calgary Snowmobile club get the trail system (read potential ski access) cleared for the season. Are any of you interested in coming out to do a little work and scouting for skiable terrain?

Pm me if you have any interest.

Cheers!

Kitten.

Hey guys, I hope the holiday break finds you well. I'd like to plan a trip over fording to scout and maybe ski a little on the weekend of jan 11/12 or 18/19.. Likely the Saturday of each weekend in case the day runs longer than expected. Would any of you be interested in giving it a go? A few from this forum have been over, and as expected once over the bony patches conditions look really good. Pm me to get in touch!

Always looking for sled ski partners. We are newbies to sledding though, decent skiers and boarders. Sharing a sled currently but will be looking to purchase a second sled soon. If anyone is ever interested let me know. We are free during weekdays more then weekends.

Right on man, I kinda of know the castle area, as well but would like to explore it some more as well. Never been in cataract or fording but would like try it out if there is snow. I hear is pretty hectic getting in to fording (lots of rocks). I've been sled boarding for about 7 years, did ast 1&2 (5-6 years ago), have a splitboard too. I'm interested to hear how you like sledding with ski boots. hahaha

If you are ever looking for someone to explore the castle area hit me up! Have had epic days on that hill but have never been on my sled out that way.
Fording pass is not set up at all for sled boarding, any pitch worth riding is super sketch and over exposed to wind/sun. if you just wanted to build a booter it might be ok.

Just a warning, sled skiing is NOT a cheap pursuit, buying a sled, paying for gas and hauling it to where it can be used can get expensive fast.

I have hiked the Cataract Creek area in the summer, unless there is something up Fording way, I haven’t seen much that would be worth skiing from the other trails. You would probably have to go down to the Castle area at a minimum, Atlas if it gets snow looks like it could have some options. Otherwise you are driving to Golden or Fernie area.

If expensive lift tickets are your sole reason for sled skiing, then head to Castle Mountain, more reasonable prices, great hill when it has snow.

Already have the sled, so that's not an issue. lol. I know its not the cheapest thing to get into and the price of lift tickets isn't the sole reason I want to do some sled skiing. Want to get some nice powder turn without the hike up.

Question about sled skiing , do you guys just wear your ski boots all day? Do the sled running boards not wreck the bottom of them?
