Sort of simple but not - the recoil spring can give you a bit of trouble.
You should review a shop manual before attempting this repair or you may just want to take it off and have the dealer do it....if not you can end up with what I did...lol..
2007 Rev
Here are photos of the one I rebuilt in the spring of last year, something didn't go right because I've done lots of these
I've also got a photo of the new one I'm installing soon.

if what ur saying is that you home runned the starter rope out of its case. make sure there's no pieces by the flywheel or you'll be looking for a stator.

Rebuilt kits are cheap, i think like 25 bucks? just need to make sure you get a new clip to put back on when you reasemble. Also, watch when you handle the spring because if it comes unraveled you can spend a LONG time getting it back together.. Been there haha.

hope this helps a bit.

if i'm not mistaken the aftermarket rebuild kits don't work because the pawl isn't the same. and usually what happens is the pawls engagment end wears down and needs to be replaced as it wouldn't stay engaged. but i could be wrong.

Rudy,

I had my rope pull through my handle and disappear into the recoil at the base of Renshaw one morning. No e-start for me, so I pulled out the wrenches. It took 20 minutes to unbolt the recoil, wind it up a bunch of times, fish the end of the rope back through the hole, put a temporary knot in it, remount the recoil, and fish the rope back through the guides. I also took a little heat to my knot in my handle after this. ;) I don't think this is a very tough DIY fix, but if you aren't sure, definitely take it somewhere.

after you get the rope fished out and are ready to tie it back onto the handle, tie a knot in the rope first leaving enough rope beyond the knot to tie on your handle. then if it happens again, your rope won't disappear into the recoil.

SBR how much did the shop charge you?

The new one for my 2007 Rev was $200.00 because my old one couldn't be fixed.
Yours is repairable for sure. What year is the sled and maybe one of us can post a exploded view of the parts. Mostly you have to be patient with the spring. If you run into trouble go see your dealer or one of us should be able to help.

there is a steel gromet that the pull rope passes thru, it cuts off the rope every 300miles or so. place a piece of heat shrink over the first 2 inches of the rope near the handle and keep replacing as necessary.

pull out plenty of starter rope and tie it off to handle bars, cut off old not and damaged area of rope(1st 1 tot 2 inches) insert rope thru heat shrink or some other protective sleeve, retie not and allow rope to recoil into housing

If you don't have access to heat shrink, some good quality tape (3M Scotch Super 33+ or Super 88) will do the trick, just wrap it many, many times over a 2" span where your rope rests against the metal grommet. Good preventative measure.
