does losing my job count lol yes I as many of us have been affected................luckily I got another good job but I have to move to ontario............the funny part is that I just finished an Avalanche course............. should come in handy near Ottawa aye :d

Have you checked prices lately? They've pretty much all dropped lumber, OSB, trusses all down. Only thing that is up is shingles and not by much. I don't know what you've been getting quoted for garages in past years, but I know that my company won't be lowering them much if any this year. However they are a lot more reasonable then some others. Framers are slow right now, but once it's nice out I highly except them to be busy again, you could get a deal building one right now, but come May, June it will not be much different then past years i'm sure. You could just build it yourself and save the labour money!

My prices on material havent changed since last summer, but a lot of truss companies are low balling prices just to get the job and to be honest my expenses are still the same as before so i doubt i'll lower my price, but i was told that i was fair on my last few quotes.

There will not be an upswing in the economy untill late 2010 or early to mid 2011. The indicator will be an upswing is the surge in orders for our commidity products. Those orders will be coming from India and China not the U.S. The U.S. will take much longer to dig them selves out of this mess.

I agree, the drop in oil prices have helped our industry. I don't care if oils drops to $1 per barrel. Better for the majority rather than a few who get rich from the oil and then the trades get greedy and other businesses get greedy also.

Personally, this recession looks good on a few businesses. They had it comming. Rather than being happy to be steady, they started cranking rates so that eventually nobody could afford their services and they snuffed themselves out. Looks good on them to be out of work.

That may be one of the most narrow minded statements i have read in a long time comming from an albertan. Do you not understand how resorce revenue likley impacts 95% of the people in this province. There are many areas of the province outside of fort mac that price gouging was not the norm and bussinesses did not make millions but only fair livings.
Maybe we in alberta have become too dependent on the oil sector but the absence of this revenue will leave a impact that will not benift anyone.
If you are in the medical field you benifit from government funded facilites and equipment,many of your patients"clients" pay for your sevices thru company benifit plans or tax funded healthcare.Those working in education again reap the same oil funded rewards as listed before,As well as construction, government service people, even farmers from surface rights and access fees ect.. The list goes on and on and on. We are all so much better off to have a dollar plus gasoline and a vibrant oil sector than the alternative.
I wonder Overbore, do you have elderly parents? My mother has parkinson's And i am very gratefull for the healthcare services and aid workers that are funded in a large part by oil revenue in this province.Not to mention the job that i have,in the oil sector, that allows me to mantain her house so she can spend her last couple of at home.

Not giving up.................Just happen to find a good job with a good pension, good pay..............with the government, close to my family, my newphews/nieces, the nuclear business has not slowed down at all...........and most important...............sledding/quadding is pretty big in this area of ontario also.............but seems a little more structured..........not sure if Im going to find the mud i'm used to here though..............

I call it the next step in ones career............but still includes sledding and quadding....and family that's the main thing right :d

Well said Scotts. I don't know how old Mr. Overbore is but more than likely he has not gone through a downturn in the Alberta oil patch. I have; the NEP of the early eighties and let me tell you it hit everybody even those whose job was not related to the oil industry. It was economic devistation for this province and it took many years to recover and what is happening now has me very worried infact scared

The way I see it if the Alberta Goverenment keeps spending billions like drunken sailors in port these layoffs and slowdowns we are witnessing right now will seem trival compared to what could be happening in the future. All these so called bail outs or stimulus packages that goverenments from around the world are handing out are going to turn around and snap Mr & Mrs Tax Payer in the behind big time. The result will be double digit inflation increased taxes, yhada, yhada, yhada I think you get the picture. The sad thing about this is that the stimulus packages will do nothing to stave off an economic melt down. Stay tuned the economic picture is about to get very, very interesting!!!!!!!

Exactly!! Economic stimulus packages are not about helping Joe Bloe, they are are proping up the banks and investment houses(short term), otherwise the US economy would have gone completely tits up. It's about holding off the ineveitable till the governements can figure out how to save all our a$$e$.

As for the garage, it's not so much the framing ands stuff. I can do a good part of that but thought maybe someone would want the work. Apparently not. Worst part is the concrete. Some of the guys that showed up at my house should have worn balaclavas and dark clothing. Throwing out crazy numbers! If they were so busy, how did they find the time to come and quote me!?

I'm looking ahead at a pretty good year, as long as I don't get laid off. Always a possibility at $40 oil I suppose. I did get diesel for $0.68 last night though, that was nice.

I think the amount of manipulation of the economy and markets is mind blowing. The whole problem was that people had too much debt ( companies making a killing from it, too ) , so now the gov't ( read: taxpayers ) are footing massive packages to spur these companies back into action making money off us again. Wow.

At least Obama came to Ottawa for a day, we should be ok now.

My company doesn't charge 15/SQ at all that is to much money(besides for exposed), have on occassion for a small sidewalk (less then 400 SQ gets pricy). We charge 10-12 pending on the size of the job and how hard is it to get at etc. This would include taking out a old pad, putting down 4" of road crush base, 10mm rebar on 16" centers both ways, then 4" of 27.5 MPA concrete with a broom finish. There is so many varibles a firm price cannot be made without accurate details, but for a garage pad I would say $11/ square foot is a good guess.

Yes and no the material cost is the same or more but labour will probably be less because we need the work not the "I dont have time for this piddly little job" Gunslinger will probably have their garage sale again and expect fairer prices

It wasn't long ago that $40 oil would have been a great price, and the producers would be going hard. Big business in general is in a state of melt down because of the stock market, and the effects are only beginning to be felt here. I also think that a bit of a slowdown might be a good thing at this point.
