Real life feedback on new 1 ton Fords or Chev/GMC's?

Ya if only these pay before you pump gas stations would get their $hit together and let you pump more than $150 at a time. Drives me nuts. Some are $200 but still not enough. My truck and slip tank holds 360l. I usually never empty both right out but when I do it’s annoying.

you can go up to $250 now at most places on pre auth.

Haven’t found one yet that will do over 150. Esso I went to in Edmonton last week would only do 100. Maybe if a guy went in the store it could be higher but again more time wasted.

Things were easier when I had access to lots of freisel.

This $150 limit was a gripe of mine for a long time. We use Petropass cards at work. At the same pump l could use the company visa and get $200 but the Petro card only $150. I had our girl phone them several times over the years and nothing changed. Until about a month ago. Now all cards seem to be higher.

Back to truck reviews. I have to say l don't care for Fords electric locker. Why do l want to reach for a knob when I'm starting to spin. Give me GM's locker any day. It works flawlessly.

Would go a lot faster if I didn’t have to pay twice or three times though.

You push the “other amount “ option and will let you choose the amount you can pump. It usually tops out at $500

Jungle Jim here is my 2c... always been a Ford guy so I am biased a bit. Currently have a 2017 F350 crew long diesel, previously had a 2015 F350 crew short diesel. The difference between the 2 is amazing while swapping out trucks this summer, I had the opportunity to pull the same trailer back to back with both and I was blown away at the difference between the two. The 2017 pulled like it had another 100hp and 2 less horses. The way the chassis handled it was also impressive at no time did I feel overwhelmed by a 46' 4 horse LQ trailer loaded to the max. With the 2015 I knew it was there...

My nephews rodeo, and 1 runs a dodge and 1 runs a ford, they swap every 1-2 years. The Dodge does get slightly better fuel mileage but the way that those Aisin auto transmissions shift leaves a lot to be desired IMO.

Never really considered a GM and I'm not sure why.. My boss just bought a new D-max and was commenting on the fuel mileage that it was ridiculously good.

I personally think they are all so close now that for me its all about the dealer and relationships where you get the best support is where I buy.

Last year I owned a new dodge 3500, Chevy 3500 and a Ford F-350, all long boxes, all diesel, all optioned the same. The only one left is the Ford and I LOVE IT! They all pull and haul trailers from a 36’ Tri axle equipment trailer, to a round bale trailer and a big four place enclosed, they do it relatively the same but I can say that the Chevy and the Ford did it the best. Lag and shifting on the dodge was an issue, you hit the gas it goes, but I agree the transmission I wasn’t a fan of at all, power is power, Cummins isn’t a strong enough argument anymore to sell a truck. Head room sucked, fit and finish wasn’t comparable to the Chevy or the Ford. Back seat was alright but nothing great. I got rid of it because I was absolutely unimpressed with it for the price it cost, dealer was alright (Westlock). The Chevy (Competition Chev) rode like a car, but sagged like it had a broken frame. The back seat was horribly small, head room was alright. Cockpit for two people was super comfy, good options and easy to reach. But it was a two person truck, even the kids were too big for backpacks and a road trip goodie bag in the back. When I bought my Ford the only thing I did was open the driver door, put the seat all the way back and jumped in the seat behind it. There’s a foot between my knees and the seat, flat floor it’s huge. The top end of these brands isn’t the same...Longhorn has a plastic steering wheel, seats aren’t very comfy. High Country should be a step towards the now not the back then and they should offer some upgrades. The Platinum (Sherwood Ford) is hands down the top end. They’re all relatively priced the same so the extra here there shouldn’t matter. Dodge and Ford were the only two with factory drop in ball and hooks in the box. The Ford pulls like a mule, I have exhaust and an air box system on it, stopped there don’t need a chip or anything else. It’s ultra comfy, has options that you can change you interior lighting even. The full surround camera system makes this F350 crew cab long box super easy in tight parking lots as you have a 360 degree view from the top of the vehicle. It also came with an auxiliary camera that goes right into the rear plug that you can mount onto the top or end of a trailer and view on the huge screen in the dash. Mileage is descent for sure, can go Stony to Edson, top up head to VTown return drive Stony to Spruce a couple days, head to Red Deer and come back and fill up in Leduc. I’m not a mpg or km/l kind and guy, but having 178 liter tank is the cats pjamas. The Chevy and the Dodge tanks were too small for the type of trucks that they are. Being completely neutral, the Ford does it all in my world better than the other two did, family, work, towing, hauling, the little things and the big things are just better for my world. I’m not saying I’m the know it all guy, but I’ve bought, drove and used these three and my choice would be the Ford, then the Chevy then the Dodge. Backseat size F,C,D. The zip and zing F,C,D. Fit and finish F,C,D. Comfort and family, F,C,D. Nothing wrong with any of these trucks if that’s what you choose, I don’t think that anyone makes a bad truck anymore, they are all nice and they all work. This is simply a what I didn’t like about them description, and not meant to offend anyone or start a war, but hopefully help you decide as it’s a big investment.

So far with my GMC the only thing I do not like compared to my Dodges is the back seat. About the same amount of room leg wise but we have a Great Dane and with the seats flipped up there was more room in the Dodge and nicer with the fold flat floor.

Otherwise I don’t regret the change.

Ford wasn’t even on my list as my family has had them before and after horrendous service and big losses on the trucks I just couldn’t go that direction. I realize they have changed in reliability over the years but when you own a vehicle for 9 months and it spends 7 of those months in the shop with no courtesy car or anything and you have to dump it for $40k less than purchase (even at fleet pricing) a guy tends to be jaded on the company and the product.

Fast farmer has good points and just about spot on .


I have owned Fords for years and tried a 2012 Duramax 3500 which I still own and it’s been the best truck I have ever owned to date for cost of ownership.
Have had a couple 1/2 ton GM’s and then a 2016 f150.
Ford has hands down the most options .
Fords quality is terrible in regards to plastic ,glass and just cheap fancy add on’s .
I am now back to a 2017 1500 gmc and 61000 kms and nothing for repairs.
Fuel capacity on GM sucks . Lol
Cost of ownership is way less then the f150 driving same roads and same driver.
I can’t comment on the Dodges as wouldn’t own one personality.

Dealerships I find are less willing to go that extra mile. You don’t see a service station with a guy nowadays that has a rag in his back pocket leaning in the window saying pop the hood I’ll check the oil and pumping your gas, rather stuff in your card as many times as you want to I don’t care and someone behind a bullet proof window. Cost goes up service goes down. Relationships matter these days, doesn’t matter what your buying but at the end of the day a buck is a buck and that will always shine through. People try, but the experience of buying a vehicle is so very different now, changed and complicated, I will always go to somewhere that will do the little things, like throw an extension cord and a jug of washer fluid in the back and a few branded cleaning supplies (Jack Carter Dealership), or the ones that wash your vehicle that you brought in dirty because they took a bit longer (Barrhead Ford), or the dealer that throws you the keys and says bring it back tomorrow (Westlock Dodge and Competition Chev). Buying a truck is like a hunting spot, everyone has a honey hole and a reason to go there...

Why not? Washing it couldn't be any harder than working on the mechanical or electrical components of the truck :confused:

But the kid out back washing likely is the same kid emptying the trash. Rinsing before scrubing likely isn’t in the job description

While I agree with you it should be more complex for sure some people just don’t understand that dirt scratches paint. Must remove in the least aggressive method possible. I polish cars on the side and you would not believe what people think paint will take for punishment. Ah well keeps me busy..

I think they are all terrible as water base .
My 2012 GM isn’t to bad but the 2017 takes nothing for it to chip or wear.
Clear film on all wear areas.
The 2016 Ford was terrible as well and had film on it also.
Buy a new vehicle and have to spend another $1000-1200 on film. Grrrr

My last two GM’s were better.

I am hoping my GM is good. My Rams were horrible for paint chipping, it would chip off if you looked at the truck. The worst one I had was a 17 Limited with pearl white paint, horrible paint for chips and quick bumper rust.

I have about $1800 on mine. The entire front which is bumper, grill, 1/4 of fenders, 1/4 hood, a pillars, every small front piece, headlights, fogs, front of flares and then the first 10” of the rockers for all doors and box side and the complete tailgate.

Next truck I am doing the entire thing lol
