Apparently, it is one of the hazards or common occurrences of bicycle riding in the Shuswap. Hawthorn thorns picked up by the tires. Who would have thought??

Running a new septic field. Had to find the gas line I need to cross before we sink the backhoe bucket in the ground tomorrow.

Mining guys cut my just installed 4" X 80# high pressure line in half with a D10 and ripper.
Amazingly they did not ignite the line or D10, mist spraying as high as light poles out of the ground..
To some flagging and marker posts mean nothing.
Chit hit the fan pretty hard on that one!!!
Soooooo glad I was 1.3m deep.

I prefer the hand expose or hydro method.

Haven't had one go that bad yet thankfully. Only ever damaged one, homeowner refused to wait/pay for ATCO to cut back line, and snagged line digging out around house because it was ran in a zig zag, not a big deal.

But i've found a few that ATCO "moved" minimum 2m from excavation so clear to dig yet low and behold find a gas line with the hoe, but never damaged them.

Yea I like to see the line if i'm going anywhere close. Easy to just dig 6-8" at a time with a shovel then clear it out with the hoe doesn't take very long to expose, a lot quicker then digging down all the way by hand.

I would highly recommend the hydrovac method.... but I may be a little biased.
