Ralph Klein was premier of this province for my entire childhood. Watching him on TV I used to believe that politicians were truthful honorable people that did what they said and said what they meant, who put the best interest of the people first. Oh the naivety of being a child...

Some of Ralph's accomplishments:

1) Hosted the first profitable Winter Olympics in Calgary
2) Paid off Alberta's $23 billion debt
3) Eliminated the MLA pension plan and cut his own salary
4) Oversaw the expansion of the oil sands into a huge growth engine for the economy
5) Saved healthcare and education by paying off the debt so tax revenue didn't go to paying interest on debt, but instead went to frontline workers and equipment
6) Added billions to the Heritage Fund
7) Reduced debt servicing costs from 11% to 0% of all taxes Albertans paid
8) Admitted when he was wrong and did the right thing
9) Reduced small business tax rates
10) Reduced personal tax rates
11) Reduced corporate tax rates drawing the highest concentration of head offices in Canada to Alberta and the jobs that came with this
12) Attracted countless new companies to Alberta. Today those companies employ tens of thousands.
13) After paying off our debt, made record investments in our universities, colleges, schools, roads and provincial infrastructure.

Ralph was great. The one thing I would fault him a bit on is the cuts to speed up paying off the debt. Some were too far and caused issues and more money down the road. But compared to any other politician he was still a million times better.
