I wonder how much $$$ there would be had taxing out of province workers? I assume they don't pay Ab. income tax and their $$ sure as hell doesn't get put back into the local Ab. economy.

You do know they pay both federal income tax, and income tax in their home province on what they earn in Alberta, right? Now you want them to pay more income tax? That seems.......un-Canadian. :D

But does the tax they pay in their home province make it back to Alberta?

Flights, hotels, resturants, clothes etc. I would say some stays, oh wait you don't have a PST. So probably not.

I agree 100%. Need workers to make it happen and clearly AB doesn't have the population within so need outside workers….. preferably Canadian.

Why should it? Alberta clearly has a desire to develop resources beyond the capability of workers living in the province and as such it must attract workers from elsewhere.

What do you mean why should it? They use the hospitals, doctors, public facilities, in some cases the schools if they bring the family out here. Road tax via fuel is the only direct tax collected from out of province workers. I paid taxes in Canada on money I earn outside of the country even though for over half the year I'm not even in the country so I fail to see the difference. And attracting workers is different from forcing them to come here.

If they are using the hospitals, doctors, public facilities, schools and have their families here then they are residents and most likely pay Alberta income tax. For the most part they fly in, do their work, then fly home and don't really use any of the services. So same as you as a Canadian citizen that lives in Canada they pay at least federal income tax and provincial income tax in the province of their residence. Alberta actually has a very low provincial tax rate for high income earners and many probably take advantage of that by becoming residents.

Edmonton saw a 40% increase in sales of homes over 1 million last year.

As far as hospitals and doctors go, BC Health Care would pay for that if they were BC residents. If they have children in school and are renters then the landlord pays the school tax. If they are residents then they are like most Albertans and pay their own way with all applicable taxes.
