Not everyone in alberta makes "oil money"..... we have restaurants, wal-marts, service providers, grocery stores etc.... many people are employed in minimum to mediocre paying jobs/careers

There are higher wages here yes, but also a higher cost of living.
Yes the working poor is a serious problem in all provinces.

News today saying 1 in 8 in Edmonton living in poverty. That's an after tax income of $16,968 for a single person.

There is always a dark side to a boom/bust cycle. No one pays attention till the bust side. Like Bogger said....not everyone works in the patch or for the patch.

Scarey part of this IMO, $17000 after tax = $20000 ish gross, = approx $10.50 / hr x 160 hrs/month x 12 months.

Hahaha....all these albertan's living in fantasy land, their cloud nine is dissipating and reality is setting in now with the rest of this country.
Welcome to the real world, hope your not living beyond your means too much cause the tax man want's part of your over paid wages.

Maybe this will help our enviroment when it comes to our snow condition's, less big money, less high paying jobs, less coal burners with sleds equal's less pollutants in the environment. Just like teaching old dog's new trick's. haha
This right here proves there are just as many dip****s in bc as there are here in Alberta. Maybe most of the dumbass people we have here are because of the masses headed here for good opportunity.

Like every other born and bred Albertan I was always opposed to a PST, until it was put to me another way. When is the last time someone from BC or New Brunswick or anywhere else paid taxes to the Alberta government? Thats right, never. We, on the other hand pay taxes to the government of whichever province we happen to spend our money in. If we replaced an existing Alberta only tax, like, say income tax, with a PST that brings in the same money, we all win (at least all Albertans). I think we pay enough already so I don't like the idea if it does not replace an existing tax. Since we are paying a sales tax already it wouldn't change the way we already spend our money. As always, the devil is in the details, and it doesn't change the overspending ways we have seen, but it should at least be thought about.

Jim Prentice is certainly the best leader we have had in a while, I'm glad the last two buffoons are no longer around.

Wake up from your dream, if a PST is implemented there will be no personal income tax reduction. The consideration of a PST is to increase general revenue not keep it the same lol.

Personally I like the fact that the truck I just bought was instantly $2250 less than if I bought it In Sk and $3150 less than BC.

Even if they said it was, they'd be lying like all politicians do. The BC government told us the HST would be revenue neutral when they forced it down our throats. When we forced it back up their azzes they said they couldn't afford the lost revenue if they repealed it. What lost revenue.....it was revenue neutral! Friggin liars!

The money has to come from somewhere. If your oil revenue is down about half and sounds like it's going to be that way for awhile the tax payer will pay.Governments try to balance the increasing need for everything, they will do whatever it takes to increase their revenue. PST may be reality for Alberta. Federal Government is delaying the budget so they can fudge the #s and try to get reelected.

I don't want to get into an Alberta vs BC bitch fest. It's ridiculous. Mike I like you and consider you a pal but the same old nonsense that BC would be better off without Albertans coming there gets old. BC has enough of its own issues and you should worry about those, not count how many red plates are driving through your town.

I have lived in Bc, I live in Ab now, heck I have lived in a lot of places. It is ridiculous to say one is better than the next. Heck go move to Quebec if you want to be high and mighty.

Anyhow, this province has been subject to its natural resource success for much to long. So long that the province spends money like a 20 year old kid working in the patch. They have relied upon that income for so long that there was minimal concern for what would happen if it went away. How many of those 20 year old kids are sticking a portion of their earnings in a place for a rainy day? Not many. The politicians known their lives as that politician are short. They inherit this trust fund and can't wait to spend it.

I don't work in an industry driven by oil and gas. There is revenue that is driven from oil but the bottom line does not affect my employment directly. I chose to live in AB because it allows me to have a fairly low cost of living with a modest paying job. If there was a PST introduced here it would be one less reason to live in AB, albeit a very small reason. I can't wait to be living in BC again and when an opportunity arises it won't a sales tax that deters me from moving there.

The only people AB can blame for the government even entertaining a PST is themselves as we vote them in. As soon as that crazy chick stated running this province I knew it was time to move. You only had to look at BC and the mess another woman who went on a crazy spending spree. Call it sexist I don't care but women like to spend. Is that stereotyping? Maybe. Just because it's a stereotype doesn't mean it's not true.

Replace a tax......oh man that is a funny. Governments don't replace a tax they ADD a tax.

I think perhaps you didn't understand the HST platform. HST is the best form of taxation hands down, especially for small business owners and single parents. What you are defining is a classic case of fear of the T word. The gov't lost money because miss informed fear folks believe the gov't is trying to steal from them and forced a vote against it. How about no tax's but every time you turn around you need to pay a toll. Financially speaking PST would be the smartest move AB could make. I would really like to know how the aging population expects to be taken care of if the government has no money? I wouldn't expect your kids to do it because they are so financed they can't take care of themselves. You guys are all saying how Albertans make the most money and how wages are so great then why is Alberta the province with the highest house hold debt? Where is that extra money going that your not spending on tax. Fact of the matter is no matter what the gov't is going to call it you folks east of the rockies will be getting a tax of some sort.

I for one was a huge supporter of the HST when it was in BC. So many people get worked up about the T word, but in all honesty if the money went towards things like its suppose to then it is justified, health, schools, roads assistant programs etc.

the problem is it's not spent wisely. It is totally mismanaged and squandered away.

As i have mentioned, there are several ways to increase revenues without hurting the average Albertan.

Raise corporate tax rates 1/2%. Alberta would still have one of the lowest rates but bring in a lot, a lot of cash.
Revamp the royalty scheme to give Albertan's their true "fair share".
Stop the corporate welfare. Subsidies in the billions every year.
Chase down the corporate tax cheats. Alberta loses millions and millions a year. Not to mention all the corporate tax loopholes that allow a very significant portion of revenues to leave the country.
Progressive income tax.

But we all know not one of our lying, cheating, stealing politicians will ever bite the hands that feed.

Frustrating!
