A few games into the season and a few surprises so far. St. Louis has looked extremely good until last night. I really don't expect Halak to play like he has all season (I'm one of the very few that think MTL kept the right goalie).

LA - Has all the tools for a very good year but is lacking a real goal scorer. Kopitar needs someone besides Brown, Smyth and Poni to play with.

Chicago - True, they only lost bottom 6 talent, but the role players are typically the most important come playoff time. Turco is decent, but WAY past his prime. The only thing making him look good is playing behind Keith and Seabrook.

Detroit - Age really doesn't matter playing for Babcock. Heck they've got a 40 year old leading the league's defensmen in scoring so far. No, he won't keep it up, but this is possibly the deepest team in the league along with Vancouver.

Montreal - Price has been elite so far. Can he keep it up? Can Gomez finally earn his paycheck? These two questions alone could greatly impact Montreal's season.

Toronto - One star player, 4 slightly above average defensemen, and a goalie past his prime, albeit with several years left in him, definitely isn't enough to even make the playoffs. Looks like Boston will have another lottery pick.

Ottawa - Gonchar won't be healthy all year. Really, who else do they have on their defense? Karlsson, Phillips, and Campoli aren't enough to carry this team past the first or second round of the playoffs (depending who they match up against)

Edmonton - LOL Way too young to make the playoffs this year. These guys are probably 2 to 3 years away from being an elite team. Desperately need to draft a couple high end defensemen and a goalie. Sorry, but Dubnyk just isn't that guy.

Calgary - How long before the Sutter's are fired? Hopefully not any time soon for everyone else's sake. Might as well trade Iginla and Kiprusoff this year and start the rebuild now. That's assuming you can still get anything decent for either of them at this point. As overrated as Phaneuf was, surely Sutter could have gotten better elsewhere.

Pittsburgh - Crosby will manage to carry his team into the playoffs again. After that, anything can happen with these guys. Don't count them out.

Washington - The depth is there now and with Carlson proving he's the real deal and Green turning in to a top two way defenseman, the Capitals are more dangerous than ever. The third line looks good so far and they have two very capable goalies.

Philly - Loaded up front with guys like Carter, Richards, Briere and Hartnell. A physically dominating defense and they may have even found a goalie in Bobrovsky. This team is once again built for the playoffs.

Vancouver - The reigning MVP out to prove it wasn't a fluke and his brother out to prove that he's even better. Add possibly the best third line in the league right now, a defense that is 8 men deep, and an all-world goalie and this is the team to beat. The only problems they've had so far are injuries and a struggling 4th line. A healthy Vancouver defense is the deepest in the league and the 4th line even got 2 goals tonight. Hey coiler's fans, How 'bout that Torres?

I think Torres' resurgence is mainly due to him just enjoying playing his game. There's a reason he was selected 5th overall back in 2000. He has the talent and grit and is capable of making players around him better. He also frees up space on the ice and makes the game easier for his line mates like he's shown with Malhotra and Hansen.

Having an elite third line, I think the Canucks will be the team to beat in the West. My early prediction for the Stanley Cup finals is Vancouver Canucks vs. Philadelphia Flyers.
