While at the SSA show today I had a pretty good conversation with a engine builder. He had a Powder Freak heas for a 850. Made some pretty big claims of mid range gains of 12-15hp and peak gains of about 10hp at 3000' on pump gas with no knock.

Gains seem like a too good to be true. I've never seen a head on a Rotax leave this much on the table. Does anyone have any experience with heads on a 850?

There is alot of talk about porting and a certain pipe giving big gains on the 850, Im waiting to hear the dyno results with this porting and pipe combo.
I would not be surprised if that head give the claimed gains.

$/hp would be a huge bang for buck of true

NPP and Jarrid at Absolute have done dyno runs and have shown 17 hp at 72-7400 and 9 at 76-7800, seems to have dropped peak RPM by about 150 and flattened torque right off on stock set up.
Gained another 5-7 hp with av gas and +2 degrees timing

The 850 comp ratio should be at 12.5-1. Unless this head has some state of the art dome design and squish band, I don’t believe it. They have to be making big changes to timing and curve. Time will tell.

After seeing various number from NPP's dyno I don't know about that unit... I know the fella thought bought out Split second from Ralph so I may pick up a head and do a stock run on that dyno and put the head on see what gains are there for some comparison numbers.

Did many people run high compression heads on the etec with good results? Ive never heard of anyone. I ran an engine tech 14:1 head on my 2010 xp and it was an unbelievable difference.

I got a h2o head mod done to my 14, definitely has more, especially in the mid

13.5-1

With mild porting and head I could see those gains but not just the head itself .

Been told by a few people that porting on the 850 isn't as big of a gain as the 800s.

I keep thinking...if the gains for this head are true..why even consider a BB?

Remember when they couldn’t make any gains on the 800 for a period of time as well if this is the case on the 850 ?
Agree 100% with your comment on BB .
Be interesting to see what if any difference there is between previous couple years 850 and the 2019 also?

Not after hearing about the potential gains with porting and a pipe.

But than again wasnt bikeman claiming 5hp with a y pipe???

I was given a tech tip from a engine builder to check and make sure the exhaust gasket was installed properly and not hanging down covering the top of the exhaust port. Maybe thats were bikemans y pipe gain was???? Lol

Everyone I know who has played with these so far all agree that the one y pipe can’t be beat unless you run a pipe too. Just changing the y pipe lost HP and caused detonation.
