A few years ago there was quite a sleuce set-up for gold mining, and these guys were dooin' it during their summer holidays, between red deer and blackfalds on the red deer river....... We were canoeing down the river and were able to see this operation in the works. Quite the set-up, and they were fairly successful at it they said. About $30,000 clear for 3 of them for 2 1/2 weeks work, after paying for all their equipment etc...... I don't know if a permit was required or not?

My brother got into it for a while,
I started doing it also but had to quit before I sold everything I had to chase gold fever. It's really alot easier to find,in small quanities, than most people think. I think we still have half a pound of mercury around somewhere. Iam not even sure if it's still used to separate the flour gold from the blacksand or not... Hope not but you can have it if you want. Kids will have a blast with it.

ps. Really cool idea BTW!!

Thanks Scotts!!!!! This is going to be a great summer!

Just about every single body of water in canada has gold in it to some amount.

Imdoo'n, I would of course not put my kids in any jeopardy. I'm quite the health nut. I thought it was kind that scotts offered something gold panning ish.

Ah yes.... the famous type o or so I hope..... Trish , Trash.... lol:eek::eek::eek:

This came up about a week ago. A friend of mine and I do the calls for the sled club meetings the night before each meeting. I knew he was going to be super hung over, so I told him I'd do that half of the list. We were communicating on Facebook on each other's walls. What did I get for my kindness..... "Thanks Trash".... good times... hee hee...
apparently auto correct automatically inserts Trash for Trish.... awesome for the self esteem.

scotts seems to have a thing to post questionable stuff, mercury is not a good thing to have, and isn't allowed in alberta waters, and i would not let kids handle it.

I'm interested in the science behind it. The few fillings my kids have are not mercury, lol. I would not let my kids near mercury. I do, however, like to know all of the theories and tricks used in Gold Panning. We find it facinating!

check out commercial solutions, they have most of the supplies you'll need. except they want your gold before you start:d:d:d:beer:

Just the name "commercial solutions" tells me your gonna spend way to much money. Most or all sporting goods shops will bring the gold pans in for you. Canadian tire also carries them. Get the green plastic ones with "steps" on one side they are $12 each. You will need a small cheap gardening shovel for loading your pans and rooting around in the mud their cheap. A rock hammer is a good tool to have for busting rocks apart to find indicators but not a must have and can cost around $40. I just use an old welding hammer I had kicking around. You will also need a little tiny suction bottle for collecting your gold from the bottom of the pan. I think I paid $3 for mine. That's it....your rigged.

Mercury is pretty dangerous stuff, I wouldn't recomend it unless you know how to handle it safely. There are some other ways, require more work but much safer. Go buy a eye dropper.

We have a question:

The creeks and rivers are quite low right now, as the spring thaw has not started. Is it best to wait till after the high waters of the spring have subsided to start panning, or can we begin now?

You can pan right now. Low waters are good cause you can get in under the bigger rocks that are normally under water. You will be able to see where the sand settles and dig around in there. Anywhere you can find moss and sand mixed together is good. The moss holds the gold in it's fibers. Just put it in the pan with a couple handfuls of larger rock and swish away. Like said before watch for black sand, quartz, chunks of coal, they are all indicators that tell you gold may be present.
