So... have any of you panned for Gold. I've been given the go ahead from the kids Liason teacher to roll Gold Panning into our curriculum. It's pretty neat, we can incorporate Social Studies, Math, Science, Phys Ed and English while we embark on our Gold Panning Journey.

I stopped by the local Lapidary Shop and put a Gold panning Kit on hold. It comes with some pans, a video and a book. Because we have 4 kids we also reserved a few more pans.

I was wondering, if any of you have words of wisdom pertaining to Gold panning. Apparently our area is rich in Gold, just takes some time and patience to retrieve it. Is there anything else we would need? The kids are very handy when it comes to building as well. We'd like to build a machine to separate the gold from the sand too. (we watch Gold rush Alaska) lol.

What do we do with the Gold once we've successfully separated it? Where do we sell it? Can we process it ourselves?

Thanks peeps!

we did gold panning with the scouts when I was a leader, we took the kids down to the north sask river by fort edmonton park, pretty amazing how much gold there is sitting in the banks...

Patients is key, the technique gets old fast but if you try to rush it you risk losing a find.... we found the darker the sand the more gold, so if you can find an area with a dark grey/black sand bottom it will increase your odds.

Good luck Trish...

We have some claims that we operate every summer. The little gadgets you buy to make life simple in gold mining are kinda expensive and if you have a shop class the kids could easy build most of the for little money. Check out some youtube links. That being said, it a learning experiance to find what is going to work for you. The best secrets to find gold are the ones you discouver yourself.
PM me if your interested and I can give you some private tips and secrets I have discovered over time.

Awesome!! Thanks Ian!!! I'm not sure who's more excited. Us or the kids. I'd like to make a camping trip out of it too! Should be fun.

What did you do with the gold once you found it?

the kids kept thier pieces, there was a freelance panner there who makes a living at it, he estimated the value of the kids finds, ranged anywhere from $0.50 to $4.00 per kid...

Last summer I guided a couple prospectors for a few days in my area and it turned out to be A Very Addictive hobby for my kids and I. I got to take my kids along with me and they taught us the art. I don't go anywhere without a pan anymore. There is gold in almost every mountain creek if you know where to look. It's a cheap hobby to get into unless you plan on actually making money at it. If the fish aint biting, out comes the pans :) I'd post pictures but im at work using my iPad...I'll post later.

Thanks Darcy!! Yup we're just planning on doing it for fun/ fishing time for mom. The Goat is one of my favorite rivers to fly fish, and the kids come with me, to fish and swim. Gold Panning just seems like one more activity we can do as a family while enjoying summer.

Gold panning is a very relaxing time. And it can be very exciting. I've found the best luck around spotscwith black or dark grey sand if you can find it! The kids are gonna love this experience! Good thinking on your behalf to try and broaden there horizons!:d

My brother got into it for a while,
I started doing it also but had to quit before I sold everything I had to chase gold fever. It's really alot easier to find,in small quanities, than most people think. I think we still have half a pound of mercury around somewhere. Iam not even sure if it's still used to separate the flour gold from the blacksand or not... Hope not but you can have it if you want. Kids will have a blast with it.

ps. Really cool idea BTW!!
