The U.S. deregulated the airline industry back in the '90's. Until then it wasn't allowed to overbook a plane. Since then it is. The airlines decided to overbook (sell more tickets than there is seats) to compensate for people that buy a ticket and don't show up, and then re-book later using their credit with the air line.
They overbook in an attempt to fill up the plane and maximize profits. When everybody shows up, somebody gets bumped. They usually offer a "travel voucher" or cash for someone to voluntarily give up their seat, and that person takes a later flight and has the voucher or cash as compensation for being inconvienced.
when no one volunteers, then someone gets bumped involuntarily.
Where it gets $hitty is that it's not always the last guy on the plane who has to leave. Let's say you fly once a year and got your ticket at some last minute flight discounter for $200. And there's another guy without a seat who flys 5 times a month with the same airline and paid $800 for his ticket at the counter an hour before the flight. Guess who's gonna get bumped.
The airlines make the decision based on a business decision. The frequent business traveller gets the seat.

Is is it fair? Nope. Does it suck for the guy who gets involuntarily bumped? Yup. But those are the facts on how the airlines work, and right in the fine print it stipulates how and why the airline can deny you service. And make no mistake about it they can deny you service whether you think it's your "right" or not. The airlines routinely overbook and then have police escort people off who refuse to leave. The incident the other day is what happens when a bunch of people make bad decisions and don't think things through.

This united airlines fiasco was because of a deadhead flight. I agree with everything you said... But they booted him off to make room for another flight crew.

It doesn't apply. Im not saying he didn't need his ass kicked at one time or another and maybe he did, BUT this should not have gone down like this. Again no one knew his history and it could have happened to anyone.

You're right. As I said before a whole bunch of people made bad decisions without thinking them through. Regardless of common sense and despite all the moralizing about what is fair and equitable, the airlines can and will remove you from their airplanes if it's in their interest to do so.

I don't think his background is relevant. The point, I think, is that on an hour and 20 minute flight, they could have accommodated the crew elsewhere. If it was that important, they could have offered more incentive to passengers. BTW, I would never take their 'generous offer of a big value voucher" because the F*tards only give what they call X seats of which there are very few. Worse than trying to use Airmiles for a flight. Pay me a cash bonus and give me a cash refund on my ticket and I would get off and fly some other A**hole airline.

If it was that important, they could have offered more incentive to passengers. And it would be a fight you would lose. You could stand up and say that you're the most important $hit shoveler there is in Cardiff Alberta, and they wouldn't care. If they want you off, you're off.

Not for a while. I'm thinking the offers for giving up your seat are gonna be far more attractive for a while, if they have to ask. And that'll be thanks to the Dr, whether by accident or not, these types of situations are a catalyst for change , sometimes better sometimes worse. I'm also thinking that this overbooking is an issue that is gonna be popping up on the radar of the authorities in charge of such things, hopefully a more consumer friendly stance will evolve.
If it does change , it'll probably be short lived , eventually morphing back to a corporate advantage, but for now, we're gonna see changes.
And as I said, I hope he sues the living $hit out of that airline.

He will and he'll come out with a bunch of money, most of which will go to his lawyers as is usually the case. What's gonna be interesting is the long term effect. Either the government will stay out of it and little will change, or they'll get involved and ban the practice of overbooking. If that happens the airlines will quantify the costs of no-shows and empty seats, and either raise prices to cover their costs, or implement a no refund policy for all but the highest priced tickets.
Either way there's no upside for anybody

Airline offers you a service on THEIR aircraft and has the "right to refuse service", similar to other businesses. You buy a ticket, thus agree to their rules, sorry no "rights" for you. I agree
With what others have said, they should have kept upping the price rather than calling the cops, bad move United. As far as I'm concerned Chicago police are more to blame for this.
Thoughts/comments? If this opinion hurts your feelings I'm so sorry... One simple way for you guys to solve this is to avoid flying with airlines that conduct an overbooking strategy.
I have no problem flying with cheap united, however, they do suck in pretty much every other way. I'm not that important like some of you guys, I can miss a flight for cash.

For those saying "The rules is the rules" If you read the airline tickets, they can keep you from boarding an aircraft but after they have issued you your boarding pass and have let you on board, their ability to randomly throw you off disappears and they have to incentivize passengers off the plane. The only exception to that is unruly behavior or threatening the safety of a flight which the Doctor clearly was not. United is screwed legally and the only way that doctor won't sue is if they give him buckets of cash not to. Even if he chooses not to sue the airline (because they pay him off) airport security is still screwed because they had no legal reason to remove hom from the flight as noted above.

United has lost a substantial amount of market capital which will generate shareholder lawsuits against the directors and officers especially as the CEO recently won a communications award and at the very least shouldn't have thrown gasoline on the raging fire by coming out in support of United staff. The whole thing happens because they were too eff'n cheap to offer a reasonable reward for passengers to get off the plane.

I again point out that they were moving crew from one place to another. Crew movements are scheduled months in advance much like the flights themselves. This entire incident is due to poor planning, arrogance, poor execution (meaning they actually loaded everyone on the plane and then decided someone had to leave rather than at the gate), were too cheap to offer a big enough incentive for people to leave at that point and then call in security who decide they are going to "rough this little chink up."

It will be interesting to see this unfold but if any airline isn't learning from this kind of F-up, I sure don't want anything to do with them. If they can't figure out how to load passengers it is reasonable to think that their ability to maintain a complex machine like an aircraft is likely suspect.

I used to do a fair bit of flying and only had one occasion where, before boarding the plane, the gate personnel advised me the flight was overbooked and they would put me on their next flight. I explained my situation which was that I flew from Edmonton to Calgary to specifically catch this flight to Houston for a meeting this afternoon (all booked through a single airline). If they were unable to make that happen, they needed to fly me back to Edmonton and refund all money for my flights. A seat for me suddenly opened up.

My excuse was no better than the doctor's who pointed out he had patients in the morning but by doing it at the gate it serves to defuse the situation. United is clearly wrong and will get slapped pretty hard for this. BTW, the above happened on a United flight as they are a Star Alliance partner so handle a number of Air Canada's flights in the US. Much sharper Canadian staff dealing with the situation as it should have been.

Totally agree , and that was their mistake and why they're gonna lose big. The first Recorded interview with the Dr's lawyer , he said exactly that.
I just hope if it happens to me there are a lot of S & M's on the passenger list, I'll be sure to get a seat , cause of all the volunteers willing to help out the airlines and step aside !!

Making room for United employees because of poor planning is not my priority nor should it be anyone elses that paid to fly. Over booking flights is an evil I can live with if those who get put on the flight as the "over booked" back up need to be notified as being standby. I show up as a regular scheduled paid customer on time no issue. Of course someone will always find a way to screw stuff up. Until each and everyone of us end up in that similar situation can we will never know the outcome. Personally they want to bump me it comes downs to something my Dad taught me. He said " son there is a little whore in each and everyone one of us, question is what is your price" wrap your head around that little nugget and get back to the damn memes please lol.

Your loudmouth blowhard opinion means very little to me, but i certainly aknowledge your right to your opinion. And i imagine if you were even half as good as you think you are , there'd be statue of you somewhere. Maybe on a horse , trouble would be distinguishing you from the back end of the horse . :)
