See, they got you! They aready state that random camping is not a permisible activity. By disagreeing to the actaul question, you are telling them you don't want managed rustic camping sites either.

haha I know I got had, what I meant was I disagreed with their rustic sites in place of random camping. Might have to fill it out again if I can

LETHBRIDGE - The push-back from Off Highway Vehicle groups, seems to have worked.
Environment Minister Shannon Phillips has just announced a number of revisions to the Castle Parks Draft Management Plan, including:
1) Extending the public submission process 30 days, From March 20th to April 19th.
2) A public consultation process for southwestern Alberta - details to be worked out- beginning March 8th.
3) All trails in the Castle Parks will remain open to OHV users this year. Within 1yr. all illegal trails will be closed, but all legal trails will remain open and accessible to OHV users.
4) Improving clarity for ranchers' grazing permits.
5) Improving fish recovery strategies for threatened species.
6) A $20 million dollar, 4 yr. investment in the Castle Parks including increased enforcement and education.

It seems like they have flippflopped somewhat. Watched the video too. ATV trails for game retrieval, snowmobiles likely to be allowed, some ATV access from the Pass.

Still the press release is heavy on the things they say families do - hunt, hike, fish and camp.

Correct. And they want to ban random camping. So hunt , hike or bike can't random camp.

Still need people to do survey and send in letters

I agree. Keep it going still needs more pressure. Lets see how this new stakeholder meeting go. 1 motorized with 9 enviro groups isn't balanced. Lets hope all the provincial associations are involved and get to say their plan forward. We all are infavor of paying extra we just need them to accept the idea of a management plan that works for all users

The good news is that we've been noticed. The bad news is that everyone thinks this was some sort of victory. As far as I can tell, they have only agreed to CONSIDER allowing OHV access to remain.

If you really want to know what the outcome will be, I'm quite certain all you need to do is ask Y2Y for their opinion. Y2Y will never tolerate OHV use in this area.

shannon phillips was just on 770. here is a paraphrase. no changes to the plan re long term OHV use in the castle, or random camping. the meetings she will be having soon(march 8 or 10) will focus around planning these activities in the Livingstone and porcupine area NOT castle. there you go. she just dug her heels in.

For now, Everyone needs to show support for ohv use on sustainable trails in Castle.

I mean everyone who enjoys any type of ohv, or random camping, sleds, quads, sxs, horse back riders.

Quads and sxs's are the start sleds will be next....y2y is ran out of the US and want to shut down the mountain use

we need to be heard

Surveys and rally's

e mails or letters

I heard her on the show and she sure didn't sound like she is budging on shutting down the area. She mentioned relocating ATV and off highway vehicles to another area. She has some pretty skewed "facts". According to her the area is a disaster and the fish population has been almost wiped out because of atv use. I suspect the floods and forest fires had a lot more to do with trout populations declining than OHV use but of course that doesn't fit in with her agenda.

Fill out the survey, keep writing letters to newspapers, government parks department, MLAs even if they are NDP, the premier, opposition parties. Get your friends to do the same even if they live far away from this area and have never been here. The NDP won't stop with just the Castle. All of Alberta is in their sights.

Thanks so much for posting these pix. We wholeheartedly agree with your words. We initially discovered this area with the "rebels" internet group, back when there wasn't an official quadding club in the Calgary area. Subsequently, and many years later, we went back to the area by ourselves and spent close to three weeks exploring the Crowsnest Pass on both sides of Highway 3. Our experience there remains to this day our most memorable holiday experience ever in this province. We are both turning 60 this year and to see the restrictions and closures being proposed for the Castle area and others (YtoY et al), breaks our hearts, knowing our kids and their families will decidedly not have the same opportunities we had to explore and enjoy our wild places in our own province. Having just visited our son and his family, one of the many discussions we had, turned to his wanting to eventually buy a dirt bike to explore the regions around Hinton. (I started out the same way so many years ago.) The end result was that we expressed our views in that it wouldn't be worthwhile to buy a dirt bike given the imminent closure of most areas in the eastern slopes. That neatly encapsulated the present situation with which we face. We are both deeply saddened and dismayed that our government is so narrow-minded and aligned with environmentalists that have a total disregard for what Albertans want as far as our publicly accessible wilderness is concerned.

I'm afraid that Castle only being open one more year ( as it stands right now ) will maybe make the situation worse. I have never ridden there myself yet, but sure want to. I'm hoping that all the families that want to check it out before it closes doesn't bring more bad publicity in terms of being over used. Media and parties wanting to close the area will be watching it like hawks waiting to jump at any opportunity to bash OHV users.
