I'm not up on this so forgive the question, why are you guys forced to give the discount at Cushing (where is this)?

If the world market price (there are different ones but this is the simplest way to look at it) is $100, Canadian oil gets less because we only have one place we can ship it. It puts us at a disadvantage. They play up shortages and high prices, but there's lots of oil in the tanks at Cushing, Oklahoma, where a good chunk of our oil goes.

As per the price of Canadian oil a lot of the value drops due to the quality of the oil, heavier oil = lower price as compared to the world market standards. Which depending on the oil currently can be $35 a barrel less than the market price you see on the news etc.

That pipeline went down and was restarted 6 times. Operator error is to blame for that spill. They never trust the instruments.

Doesn't that just erk the hell out of you? Same in the pulp industry. "Could you please check that consistancy xmitter, or that conductivity cell, or that TRS sampler.....it's reading wrong." My standard answer now is "What did your sample hand test say?" Usually shuts 'em right up, 'cuz they haven't got off their butts and done one. 99% of the time the instrument is doing it's job just fine!

The worst thing about this spill is that Plains probably knew the pipeline was corroded all to sh!t.Oil companys have pigging programs. They will run a smart pig that is worth millions that tells them corrosion and weak spot in the line.SCABS! Have to push everything to the limit just to save $$$. If the proper procedures were done this probably would have never happened!Regards to the people suffering from this spill!

So OLE 11....what rock did you just crawl out from under?! Was it a big fat GREEN one...one post and you think you know all about what happened???? Go spew your opinions somewhere else if you don't know what you are talking about!!!! There is a SCAB on here....and that would be you!

A few years ago before I started operating i ran a maintenance truck out of Slave Lake and I spent an entire winter working for plains doing smart pigging. if there were any anomilies detected in the pipe they immediately shut the line down cleaned it out and dug the pipe up to do full visual inspections of the areas where the anomilies were detected and made repairs where necessary. Plains is a very environmentally conscious company. do you think they want a broken pipe? NO! every minute that they have a pipeline shut in there losing money. whether or not it was human error accidents happen and sometimes there isnt anything a company or person can do about it. just fix the problem and move on. Honestly I've seen bigger spills but they dont get to the media because they didnt happen on a reserve where theres a bunch of whiny hold there hand out natives complaining. and so all of you who dont know anything about this area the cheif of this particular band has been causing problems with the oil and gas industry in this area for years! this was just another opportunity for him to hold his hand out for more money from the oil companies. They were complaining that the smell in the air was so strong it was giving them headaches and they gave all the kids the week off school. did any of you notice on the news how everywhere they interviewed families the kids were outside playing basketball and jumping on trampolines and having a great time! It really pizzes me off! I know the guy that was running the air quality testing units there and he said there was no problems with the air quality at all! he could barely smell anything. he said there were kids out quading around the reserve playing and partying every night.

Must have been some bad headaches tho... Thats my:rant:

dont get me started on indians but your absolutely right and it makes me sick

do you get the day after every payday off. most of them get the day off cuz they get drunk and wont show up anyways so its just easier to give them the day off. But us oil companies are forced to have x amount of natives working on every site or they put up roadblocks and chit!

Right in your post is the thing that concerns me the most about the Enbridge project, "accidents happen and sometimes there isnt anything a company or person can do about it".

What if a spill like this occurs in one of the many big salmon bearing rivers the pipeline has to cross to get to the coast? Will any of the oil sink to the bottom of the river and into the spawning beds? I ask because I don't know what type of oil they want to ship.

Everybody needs to work and earn a decent living, but at what point do we say the risk is just too great?

what kind of fuel does everyones vehicles and toys run on? Sure as hell ain't water folks!

I agree that precautiuons need to be taken but it blows me away when people start blowing their nose and rubbing that Chit in my face when most don't know what they are talking about! Its really easy to point a finger but the minute the pumps are shut off I wonder how many on here would complain? Industry is getting much wiser and better at what they do....unless some of you have facts to back up the accusations you make about pipeline and Oil Compnaies ...I would suggest sitting back and maybe reading to substantiate your claims. Some of the responses here are pretty serious and being involved in the oil patch for most of my working life...I can assure you that Rainbow or now Plains would never jepordize the environment knowingly and as Modman said...most simply have no idea the amount of money that is lost in a single day when a pipeline goes down. The arm chair critics can have all the fun they want on a computer and complain....its your right but if you don't know the facts....don't go off half cocked and make stupid statements and accusations. Many of on here take pride in working in the Oil Industry and take this very seriously. Keep cryin and join Green Peace. If they get their way we will alll be riding bikes but even then it maybe a little difficult because the rubber tires you will be riding on don't come from Rubber tree's in southern Alberta....they come from Oil. Not to mention that you will be able to save some money on gas because maybe you won't be able to afford it or god forbid...lets not make any because it is too risky! The next time you pull the lever at the pumps ....think about all the technology and work that has gone into bringing you the fuel that lets you get to work, go on holidays, cut the grass and maybe transport a loved one to a hospital.....Wake up some of you!

dont get me wrong I am 100% in favour of the oil industry in our country and would never offer an opinion as to why a certain issue occurred because I dont know. However, dont be so sure of yourself about the safe guards in place for any potential environmental damage because we are all to familiar with the BP issues and the shortcuts taking place by big oil companies. Like everything in life we need checks and balances to keep everyone on their toes. In the meantime keep the pipes flowing in the safest way possible :):)

I never said either of those things?

I work with the representatives of a "certain" pipeline company on a routine basis, and they are environmentally conscious to back your statement, never said they weren't. Even with smart pigs in all of the lines, you are still not going to catch broken coating or poor backfilling from someone who exposed your line. I've also been doing spill response for years also, so I've seen a few pipe breaks/ruptures/spills/tank overflows/packer blowouts/truck spills/etc and I can tell you that my comments were more on the general order of pipelines, there is a lot of old infrastructure out there across the province, much of it being operated probably well past its orginal service life expectancy.

Saw a spill years ago exactly like this one, fibreglass line crossing under a road, ditch work 1 mile west changed the water flow and focused more water in the ditch over the line, the roadway settled in a high spot that was dry before and the line cracked and blew out. Sh!t happens and we deal with it, life moves on, you can't worry about what others say, the media is going to play this up. One day we will all die and they can turn my body into fuel if they want, I'll be dead, so WTF do I care?

Gas is going up again today, here's some music.

I have been in the oil patch for 30 years badss and am still in it. All I'm asking is, "Is there a better way to get Alberta's oil to market than building a pipeline across such sensitive areas?". I am not saying shut-off the oil, that's f!@kin stupid. The world as it is right now cannot function without it. I have many, many engines on the ranch that require oil and its byproducts to keep running, but I am certainly open to other ways to get that oil that will not have the potential for such devastating consequences for BCers, our wildlife and our environment.

I myself agree that we need oil, but i am not overly confident or like the big pipelines going thru some very enviromentally sensitive area's to get to the coast. Over 20 years ago there was experimental drilling done just off shore of the BC coast and they found some MASSIVE deposits of oil. But that being said the gov't at the time made a smart decision in my opinion and put a moritorium on offshore drilling on the BC coast. The reason being that they cant drill it and do it where there isn't a good likelyhood of a spill. This is because they say that the floor of the ocean is extremely jagged and rocky just like the coastline. My biggest concern is that if there was a spill along one of the many salmon spawning streams/rivers what impact would that have? That would or could affect alot of people's jobs in the fishing industry. I see and talk to alot of people that work in the oil feild and i have been told by several people that if we only knew half of what really goes on envirmentally it'd make most people sick. Like other people have said accidents happen and human error happens and i'm not sure that we all should be so redilly willing to except the risk of the pristine enviroment we have here. BC has a unique coastal rainforest with other unique animal species and i'm not convinced that the oil and gas companies are always very concerned about that stuff, it seems that they can be more concerned about getting there product out easier, cheaper, and getting a better price. And yet you always here how the oil and gas companies are making record profits.

Dont get me wrong i know that we need oil and such, and there are alot of people in the oil and gas industry that do take great pride in there work and do very good work. I am also in no way saying that the oil and gas companies dont care about the enviroment. I worked in the logging industry before and i seem some of the things that went on in logging. I just get catious because of what could possibly happen if there was a spill.

How much experience does any of the oil and gas companies have dealing with an oil spill in BC's type of terrian and topography? Just askin cause i dont know.

whenever a pipeline goes through a river in BC there is a shutoff valve on shore which im sure now can be controlled remotely at the instant a problem arises.

second...

didnt look at the pics all that carefully but how do you backfill properly in a swamp

why dont we put the oil on a train.

WAIT.....
