No headlights and grips run way too hot

I was zipping along with my sled on it's side (clutch side) and smacked a stump hard enough to throw me off.
The side panel has 6 inch crack. Now, I do not have headlights (high or low) and I can barely hold the grips because they are so hot (high or low setting).
I got back from my trip last night and haven't had a good look under the hood.
I thought I'd ask for ideas on where to start when I run it in the garage tonight.

Headlights are probably blown if there is that much voltage going to handwarmers.
I would check all wiring and ground connections in the area where it took the hit.

I found one connector to the voltage regulator was disconnected. Plugged it in but same result.
I'm wondering if this could have damaged the voltage regulator.
I looked up how to test the regulator with a multimeter. Diode test but I'm getting numbers like 142 instead of the .5 to .7 that I think should showing.

Replaced the voltage regulator and headlight bulbs.
All working again.
