Nikon Black x1000 = junk

Well finally got my F1 out yesterday with the new Nikon black x1000 scope. Rifle worked great but the scope failed. Had to return it today. If anyone is looking at Nikon scopes I suggest to keep looking. I expect better quality from a $1000 scope. Others have had the same issue so it isn’t limited to the one I got.

I didn't bore site the scope when I mounted it but the range has a 25m target stand I figured I just start there. Got it close then moved out to the 100m stand to get the final site in. Got it set and started nailing the gong to get some round through the rifle to test function. After 5 or 6 round I started missing the gong. I took another shot and missed again. Took a shot at my paper target and it wasn't even on the paper. Took a shot at a clump of dirt above the stand and sure enough I was a couple feet out. Got everything back in place again and same thing. Everything tight. Bad scope. Took it off, repackaged everything with the cantilever rings and took them back to Cabelas today. I knew this may be an issue as I have read a couple guys going through the same thing and took the risk. At least I found out before the 60 day return policy was up. After 60 days you have to send back to the manufacturer and deal with them.

In the $1000 price range, most guys will recommend the Vortex PST Gen2. But I would also suggest looking at Athlon.

For a 1-8, to my knowledge you are looking at Bushnell, Nightforce, Trijicon, Primary Arms, Swaro, Vortex Strikeagle.

Very surprising that you would have a problem with Nikon's BLACK X1000 scope. Looking at your rig I would be more inclined to think it would be related to the P-Series mount's you used. I'm not sure why someone would put a $750 scope on a rifle with sub $50 mount's that have only one lock up point ? I have 3 of the BLACK Series scope's that I have used for longrange shooting and all have Nikon's BLACK Series mount's.

I would love to know more about the issues you were having with this scope. I'm the Manager for the Sport Optics division for Nikon and I can tell you that personally we have not received a single one of these back for a warranty issue. I'm a bit more demanding on scopes the most (took 5th in the country for for long range competitive shooting in 2015, and 12th in 2014) and I used the 6-24 model of that exact scope to take 6th/108 in the last match I shot with targets out to 1,420yd. I also have not heard of any other issues people have had with this scope, can you point me in their direction? If that's the case I would love to send them a replacement, and get theirs back for testing. I can only suspect the mount in this case as it's a lower priced extruded mount with a precision scope on top of it. Unfortunately you don't still have the scope or I'd send you one of our Black 1 piece machined mounts to try and they're about $150.

I'm sorry for whatever issues you've had but of the thousands we've sold we haven't received one back for a warranty return. I only wish I knew the source of the problem to find the resolution. Best of luck with whatever you choose next.

Cash flow. Mounts can be changed and it was a solid mount. I have had the rifle sitting since last July and wanted to get out and shoot it. Last time I was heavily into shooting back in 2011 my main go to was using a Nightforce NSX scope on a built Tikka. I’d love to through another $3500 scope on this one but don’t have the cash to do it.

Thanks for your time to follow up. I know of another guy with the same complaint. He wasn’t able to return the scope but had to have it repaired under warranty then sold it when he got it back.

Anyways my issue was when sighting in the rifle. I did not bore site it as I usually do as the range has a 25m stand. Got on paper and centered. At that time it had moved a couple times but since I wanted my zero at 100 m I decided to move over and work at that distance. Not used to mrad so I checked my chart and moved it up. Took a couple shoots at the gong to make sure I’d be on paper and while other guys were shooting. First hits were good but a few inches high. Good enough to get on paper. Got the chance to put some targets up and got it centered. Everything was looking good. Took some shots at the gong. First 5-6 rounds were bang on then all of a sudden it was way over in the dirt. Want back on paper and wasn’t on. Few feet off. Repeat a couple times then put the rifle away. Took off scope and home and returned the product. Everything was tight and solid. Something was obviously moving in the scope

I’ve been very underwhelmed with Nikon recently. Not sure I will buy anything from them going forward.

Not familiar with this gun so I am not sure how big it is. But you sure it’s the scope and not the gun being dirty? The reason I say this is my cousin has a 17hmr and he has to clean it every dozen or so shots or it starts shooting all over the place. He runs the bore snake through and all good! As for the vortex scopes my brother has had one and returned it a few times with less then good customer service. He won’t buy another one.

Rifle is new and sub MOA. Positive it wasn't the rifle. Plus usually when a barrel start to foul, cold vs hot barrel, different ammo etc etc it can be a few inches at 100m not a couple feet. I have only had issues with two other scopes which were pretty minor and could be dealt with. Trust me when I say the scope was Fawked. I have shot long range and set up and repaired enough rifles to know if the mounts, rifle, scope etc are the culprit. I used to go out multiple times per week to the range and shoot thousands of rounds through my .223, .308 and .338 lapua rifles. Plus reload etc etc. Just getting back into the game again. Sold a bunch of my high end gear and reloading equipment so it will take time to build up.

I guess another thing to point out is, which could be my ignorance, is the fact the scope was built in the Phillipines. I thought they were all built in Japan. To me that alone is a big difference. Again could be my ignorance and lack of research. I didn't notice until I was packaging everything back up.

Anyways I just posted this to warn others. I am glad no one else has had this issue and hope no one does again. I am not pissed off just disappointed as I was looking at a bunch of scopes in the 700-1500 dollar range and when this one came on sale I thought it was a no brainer. I guess I will keep researching and buy another one at some point in the next while.

Oh for sure. I would have suggested it to someone else too. Check all the basics first right. No rings marks what so ever on the scope or marks on the rings when it was taken apart. When a mount or scope is loose, crooked etc they will leave some sort of mark.

The only Vortex 1-8x is the Strike Eagle. It is a new model, but still their budget lineup of scopes. Whereas the Razor Gen2 is their highest lineup of scopes. Still much higher quality optics and toughness.

Selling my used Vortex Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24. This model scope is known for the best glass and illumination on the market with excellent 1x view. It has essentially zero 'black donut' when looking through it.

Reticle is the VMR-2 RETICLE (MOA).

Comes with Vortex Switchview aluminum quick throw lever.

Comes with JP Enterprises 1-piece 1"/30mm cantilever scope mount JPFTSM-30/1. The mount is normally a 30mm, and it comes with plastic reducer rings to fit 1" scopes. This mount is super robust and has been great to me for 3 years of hard 3gun use. Never moves or loosens.

There are some marks on the scope and mount from being used in 3gun. The marks are all surface finish marks, no gouges.

Everything here is in perfect working condition.
