Newer vehicles with r1234 and r747 refrigerant

Sooooo, anyone have a new vehicle with r1234 refrigerant? Any r1234 systems needing recharged require at minimum $600 to recharge your system, and most dealers don't have the newest stuff yet... The newest r747 systems require wearing a bomb suit and extreme safety guidelines to recharge a system(some european imports have this already) as it is very explosive.​

My dad has a new dodge half ton and it must have it. It needs recharging and the dealer is not able to get it till summer. They told him they have new trucks on the lot that need charging! Sounds like a crappy system

Yup, we have had 6 or more new ones that didn't make the winter and was empty

yup... The seals can't withstand the extreme pressures..... There will be a recall and something done, i'm sure. One of my techs took a course on it last nite, and learned about all the problems every manufacturer is having with it.

Wow. Not sure what went on with my super duper $1000 iPhone there sorry bout that. There was not a thing wrong with 134a. I use it everyday. Have been for the past 15 years. Cheap and easy to get.

heard about this from a buddy with a 2017 Ford F150 needing this new refrigerant. Checked under the hood of my '18 Silverado diesel and its still labeled as 134A

From what I have heard it is almost identical to 134a but harder to get hold of. Refrigeration places won't be getting it at all and it will be carefully traced for the automotive guys. Maybe in a few years one can recharge with 134a, but time will tell.

The dealership here was saying many vehicles lost charge over the winter, not just new ones.

It’s a crap shoot. For instance the recharge units that are at a lot of these shops will not be compatible. So then they will have to buy a new machine. Honeywell and DuPont control all refrigerant. Both big. They no how to control there own market. The consumer suffers. How is it that Billy buys a new truck for $65,000 no ac because we don’t got refrigerant. Well, we’re did the refrigerant go? Clutch seal most likely. Better throw a new compressor in it now too I guess. Makes a guy feel real good after dropping that kinda coin

Oh, that sounds like a issue we have at work with our Dodge 1500. I'm guessing it is a 2015. AC doesn't work (I found out the hard way on a highway drive mid-afternoon, 26C outside, clear blue skies, headed Southeast). Manager says he knows, and the shop that fixes the vehicles can't fix it anytime soon.

For sure but won’t 134a work. I have a few big bottles I charge my equipment with. Should I buy more before the tap gets shut off.

1234yf is flammable, and super expensive, and the machines are way more expensive, but the process is the same. I don’t know why dealerships are struggling to get it. My shop has no problem getting it. We buy it from cmax. Last bottle was 850$ for a 10lb, and the new requirements on the machines don’t let you use all of it, machine has to have 1.7 lb reserve after a charge, so it’s expensive af. But it’s supposedly less damaging to the environment if you bang up the front end and it leaks. Nice part is insurance pays appropriately for it. 110$/lb, and 299$ evac/recharge labor. Just have to have a machine that prints a charge ticket like the Mastercool. I’m sure people are gonna hate it tho once warranty expires and they have to pay it tho. Also parts are incredibly hard to get. Recently had to wait almost 4 months for a condenser for a 17 Silverado, back orders are ridiculous. Dodge half tons were no eta last I checked.

I thought 747 and 744 were for commercial refrigeration systems like food storage, flash freezing, etc, because of the low toxicity. Have yet to see a vehicle with it, but that might just mean I haven’t seen one yet! Any particular models to keep an eye out for?

134 is supposedly going to continue to be used in stationary coolers and such so it will be around for a while.
