Toyota Racing Development today took full responsibility for Kenseth's illegal engine. They (TRD) are the sole supplier of motors to the Toyota teams in Sprint Cup competition. They build the motors in California and they are shipped to the teams for each event and the teams have zero input on what parts and pieces go into the engines. They appologize for the screwup so this brings up the question? Should teams pull apart race ready engines before they go in there cars to verify parts on there own? Should teams be penalized for someone elses mistake? This case is very similar to the Carl Long penalty a few years ago. Here is an independent that wants to compete but doesn't have the money to go big budget so he buys like most teams a crate engine from a engine builder, barely gets into the show, randomly gets checked in post race tech as Nascar is known to do and they find an over bore engine and fine him $250000. He can't afford the fine so he has left Sprint Cup, is banned by Nascar from Sprint Cup until he pays the fine and now works as a labourer for a Nationwide or Truck team I believe. He cannot according to Nascar even sweep floors as a paid employee for a Sprint Cup team. Trust me.....Nascar is far from perfect.

Denny Hamlin tweeted this morning that he is still not ready to go for Richmond this weekend. Possibly a start at Talledega and then replaced at the first caution is his next likely window.

I think this should fall on the teams shoulders. What happens if Stewart Haas racing has a illegal engine. Should Hendrick motorsports be held liable? I don't think so. If Gibbs wants to point fingers at TRD perhaps NASCAR should make a rule that states the teams has to build engines in house. That would separate the men from the boys then. Fact is teams like waltrip and Stewart Haas would fold up there tents and depart from the sport. If Gibbs thinks its TRDs fault maybe he should start building his own engines. Or at least pay his teams enough to tear the engine down and inspect. I don't know, its just funny there hasn't been an issue with other teams building engines for certain teams. Therefore I point the finger at JGR.

Gibbs isn't pointing fingers at TRD though. TRD is pointing fingers at themselves. They are saying they have a quality control issue with this engine and possibly others. The engines are a spec'ed piece. There theoretically is no reason to pull them down at the team level as Gibbs gets the same engines as Waltrip. The media has already asked respected engine builders in the garage area if there is a performance advantage to have 1 light connecting rod and they are all saying that it may be more of a hinderance as it could cause vibration through the engine that could lead to other engine related failures (i.e. valve springs) I think Gibbs has a far better chance of getting a positive appeal than Penske does with his slotted rear end housings. And I am a Ford guy as you all know.

Didn't Gibbs used to build their own engines in house just a couple of years ago but stopped after multiple failures?

Yes they have struggled with the Toyota engines so they finally went for the Toyota in house engines.

Not sure if Mark Cronquist is still with them. He was a well respected motor builder and the man who made Tony Stewart go fast when he won the 2 championships with Gibbs.

Here's your top 5 for first practice at Richmond. 55-2-18-20-11. Kenseth was the fastest for the 10 lap average.

Qualifying is over at Richmond. Here are your top 5. They are 20 Kenseth on the pole-11-24-5-15. All 5 of the top 5 broke the track record. So who is everyone picking? My heart is with a Ford but I think Kenseth has alot to prove and he is fast this weekend. Thats my pick.

Well, I'll pull for the 24, Khane had a good run last weekend and ended up kissing his sister for 2nd, not a huge fan of Khanes, but I think he's due...and he's pretty hungry for a win.
