I don't like buying anything used, because who knows what could be wrong with it.
But especially wouldn't buy a used electric car, they seem plenty sketchy to me new, forget used.

.... That's interesting... We just did an engine swap(used engine) with 1/2 the mileage as the 2013 honda civic had. $3800 total bill

But what would have been the cost of a new engine?

Part of the problem with EV's is the cost of used batteries making used parts unfeasible. There is a substantial market for used EV batteries, people are repurposing them for use as energy storage in off-grid homes. Having a look on ebay a used Leaf battery is going for $5-6k, a used Tesla battery from $15-$25k.

They offer a huge core to have the ev batteries returned for remanufacturing... Haven't read about or heard of anyone using ev batteries for energy storage. Used batteries are still major bucks, so it is much cheaper for off grid homes to buy good 6volt batteries

Here's an article from 4 years ago. It's being done more than people realize, there's lots of Youtube channels and other media dedicated to converting car batteries to off-grid house batteries.

The cost is also very comparable to lead acid, lets take a used 100kwh Tesla pack for $25,000, if we assume 80% utilization (don't charge to more than 90% or discharge to less than 10%) that works out to $312.50 per kwh. If a 6volt golf cart battery costs $200 and has an 220AH capacity it would take 121 batteries to get 80kwh capacity assuming the battery isn't drawn below 50% DoD (most people won't recommend discharging a lead acid below 50%, and realistically keeping it above 60% greatly increases life). The cost for these lead acid batteries would be $24200, this is why people are looking hard at Lithium Ion for house scale storage, for almost the same cost Li-Ion offers far higher instantaneous outputs, and superior efficiency, lead acid is about 80%, Li-Ion is over 90%.

Hmmmm who woulda thunk that Tesla has not profited from vehicle sales but in fact from green energy rebates.

The regulatory credits is money coming from other automotive manufactures, not from the government or tax payers. Every automotive company is welcome to get involved in the strategy. Tesla is using other companies money to get further and further ahead of them in R&D and technology. Traditional auto is getting outwitted at the game of capitalism.

How many times have we used government money to bail out traditional auto manufactures? Give it another few years and we'll see where the financial failures are.

Those videos show how far away they are from a competent self driving vehicle. Sure technology has come a long way, but still a long way to go before they can be relied on. Cannot smoothly get a little car through a roundabout, or a proper left hand turn, and crosses a solid line all in a few short clips, but will somehow navigate a tractor trailer in a city? Ya right.

A vehicle that can drive itself like that is pretty amazing. Given the relatively short time this has been in development the improvements are incredible. 10 years from now self driving vehicles will be common and doesn't have to improve much to be better than many drivers currently on the road now. Change is a comin :)

[h=1]From Hyundai to Tesla and BMW, battery fires turn the heat on electric cars[/h]2 min read . 19 Nov 2020Reuters
  • As carmakers are investing large sums of money to make an electric shift in order to adhere to stricter emission norms around the globe, these EVs could come at an expense of safety.
  • Electric vehicles (EVs), benefiting globally from a push for tighter emissions controls, are facing challenges after a global string of fires from overheating batteries.
Here are some vehicle recalls and investigations facing major EV makers worldwide.
    HYUNDAI MOTOR

After 16 Kona EVs caught fire in Korea, Canada and Europe over two years, Hyundai Motor Co is expanding a recall to cover at least 74,000 of its top-selling EVs in South Korea, the United States, Europe and Canada to update its battery management system.
About 23,000 Kona EVs in South Korea have completed the software upgrade, with 800 of them found to have battery defects requiring replacement of affected modules, according to the office of lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae, which was briefed by South Korea's transport ministry.
Hyundai, in a filing to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in October, blamed "internal damage to certain cells of the lithium-ion battery increasing the risk of an electrical short circuit."

The battery maker, LG Chem Ltd denied any cell defects, saying a joint investigation was under way.
    GENERAL MOTORS

General Motors Co said last week it was recalling nearly 69,000 Chevrolet Bolt EVs worldwide that pose a fire risk after five reported fires and two minor injuries. Affected vehicles will get battery software updates, limiting charges to 90% of capacity.
In October, NHTSA opened a probe after reviewing reports of three Bolt EVs catching fire under the rear seat while parked. The probe covers 77,842 Bolt EVs from the 2017 through 2020 model years.
LG Chem is the supplier of the batteries.

In September, Ford Motor Co recalled 20,500 Kuga plug-in hybrid EVs in Europe and suspended sales over battery fire concerns. There had been seven fires but no injuries.
Ford offered to replace the entire battery pack, saying the root cause had been identified as a battery-cell contamination issue in its supplier’s production process, which could cause "serious consequences."

The Kuga setbacks forced the automaker to pool its fleet with other automakers to avoid a fine. It also delayed its US production of its plug-in electric Escape SUV, which shares the same batteries, to next year.
Samsung SDI is the battery supplier.
    BMW

In the United States, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) said it will recall 4,509 plug-in hybrid EVs, saying debris may have been able to enter battery cells during production at supplier Samsung SDI.
(Also read | Battery fires put BMW and Ford on back foot just as electric vehicles take off)
This could lead to short-circuiting and a "thermal event" which could increase the risk of an injury, BMW said, instructing drivers not to charge their vehicles.

Altogether BMW has recalled some 26,000 plug-in hybrids, mostly in Europe, over the potential battery problems.
A spokesman at Samsung SDI said an investigation is under way about the cause of the fire, declining to elaborate further.
    TESLA

NHTSA said last year that it was probing potential defects in certain Tesla Inc Model S and Model X vehicles that could result in non-crash fires in the affected battery packs.
The probe was in response to a petition from an attorney representing plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit filed against the electric car maker last year. They claim Tesla limited the battery range of older vehicles via a software update to avoid a costly recall to fix alleged defective batteries.
Japanese battery manufacturer Panasonic Corp supplies Tesla with battery cells, while Tesla turns them into battery packs.
This story has been published from a wire agency feed without modifications to the text. Only the headline has been changed.

Did you get a recall for the front suspension in your Tesla? Might be something you want to look into.
