Here is food for thought: everyone comments on how these electric vehicles are inconvenience do to lack of charging stations. I just went out to start the big truck and realized it Feb at -18 and I currently have 3 vehicles in my driveway hooked to extension cords.

Your comparing apples to oranges. If you have your cars and trucks plugged in at that temp and you do not have a timer, your wasting power.

Johnny would you be pissed if you got taxed $2000/year for road tax? You know something like this has to come. You can't expect to not pay your part for ever. This must be calculated into everyone's decision to go electric.

Exactly!!
Once the numbers or percentages get high enough the taxes will start .

Get enough switched over to electric and the price of fuel will go way down .

Hopefully, may have to look into a generator and get off the grid.
My neighbors may not like the sound of a diesel generator, but it will be cheap to run.

Probably 100 jugs of washer fluid. Don’t really expect much brake maintenance. I’ll probably take them apart after this winter to take a look as I’m going to be at the 50,000km mark by then. Cabin air filter should be done soon as well as wiper blades. Tires are going to be the biggest expense I think. Electric cars are hard on rubber. With the AWD it seems like they are wearing pretty evenly. On the RWD model you definitely have to rotate frequently.

As far as saying an old ICE POS would be worth more than an electric car once the battery is toast, this can not be true at all. If you have a laptop and the battery dies it’s very likely that you get a new battery and continue to use it. This is not a car. This is an internet connected transportation robot. Another thing to consider, the price of batteries will continue to decrease over time. Human labour pricing will likely increase over time. John Deere ain’t sending someone out for less than $160/hour. In 2025, what will the shop rate be for automotive work?

Well, its not a laptop or a robot, its a car. you drive it around on the roads. And when a laptop battery dies, you weigh out the cost of the battery and the labour to replace it vs. buying a new one. Laptop battery, $100? EV battery, $5K?
As demand for the raw materials for batteries goes up, the prices will go up, its simple supply and demand theory, plus sooner or later the government is gonna realize that the old batteries are a huge toxic waste liability and will slap a big recycling surcharge on them.
I agree that labour rates for automotive work will go up. So logically thinking, the shop that changes out the battery in your electric car will charge you more too, because it will be an automotive shop that changes it, not the geek squad from Bestbuy.
At 500,000km, your Tesla will be a beat up, corroded POS, just like any other car with 500,000km on it. (assuming the battery gets to 500k, a huge assumption). A running ICE car will still drive, while your Tesla with the dead battery will not. Ask yourself if you would put several thousand dollars into a car with 500k on it? Doubtful.

why don't you get an electric vehicle then?

Been researching it lots. We aren't in the need for a new vehicle at this point and as we are a family of 5 there is only a couple models that can accommodate us. Also we are waiting for a possible life style change that may dictate what direction we go.

How much time spent charging on this trip? Total cost for charging was $7.40 in Canmore and $3.80 in golden.

If you don’t like the price of electricity you can put some magic rectangles on your roof. The more it goes up, the more you get paid.

Ya, but your 3 extension cords aren't pulling 220V and whatever huge amps they need to pull. Do that with 3 vehicles and see if the average person has enough draw available at their home. Better not be cooking a turkey....

We used to run a generator on one of our pivots and a 30hp turbine. It’s definitely not cheaper. Oil changes, fuel filters, air filters, engine maintenance, etc. Not to mention always driving out to refill it every day.

This is the part I do not get. Fine, great commuter car if you drive within the range, but who is going to sit for 30min+ to simply get a charge to continue your trip?
Secondly, I hate when people quote range of EV cars. First of all that is best case and secondly, it is not recommended to charge the batteries above 80% or let them get below 20% to preserve the battery life, correct? If so, actual range is only 60% of the quoted range.

are the batteries really going to come down in price over time?

as demand goes up, you don't think the price will too?

I just spent 280$ on a milwuakee lithium battery, i hope they come down, but they seem to be getting more expensive?

maybe some new technology will bring the price down?

Well going off this chart I would guess that they will continue to get cheaper as well as increase in energy density (wh/kg).

Let me ask a real world question. You have been posting about the model 3 for awhile. If you are fully charged, on a average day, can you drive from monarch to Calgary and back and what is the cost to fully charge?

My son has a Tesla here in PG and he has been land locked for a year, they have put some in some charging stations heading south of pg now but not out the McBride way. Winter cuts down the range.

You’re not supposed to bring up the downside of EV’s. Just the positives. Battery life is always quoted for best case operating conditions, not real life, much the same way solar and wind energy facilities are rated. Once we all understand the facts about green energy as dictated by the government/ media/ green energy activist consortium, and that questioning their facts/mantra is considered denial, we will all be much happier and the world will be a much better place.
