Moving to BC

Has anyone moved from the prairies into BC? More specifically Shuswaps/Okanagon area?

Currently living in Sask with a good stable job here that I'm hesitant to leave, but should be able to find something in BC with similar pay

Anyway, is it as good as it seems with all the outdoor opportunities or do you miss being in the prairies and being close to friends and family?

Lots of guys here have done it and I'm sure someone will chime in.

I'm looking at buying a vacation place in BC and the okanogan isnt cheap. That being said it's the place to be imo

If you are ok with not being able to visit family spontaneously then do it. I did in 2016. No regrets except for the family part. Missed a few birthdays...

Parents are moving full time to Ainsworth BC.
Love the kootenays I know mom will struggle being that far from her grandkids.

Both are retired so at least they don't have that whole having to look for wages thing.

Just completed a move from the East Kottenays (lived there 18 years) and have settled in the north Okanagan. Haven't missed a beat yet. Should have done it 10 years or more ago. The biggest part of the move was for more amenities and warmer weather..............got both and the bonus was the recreational aspect; boating, sledding, biking, camping, any of the outdoor things are tremendous.

Lived and worked all my life in the Edmonton area.

Made the move to the Salmon Arm area in 2017. Retired. A little bit of culture shock. Find local businesses don't seem to be really hungry and too often, will tell YOU when the job can be done. Sure do not have the Alberta work ethic and customer service attitude here. Sometimes it is like living in a couple of episodes of the Twilight Zone.....

Very happy with the weather, much milder and much shorter winters here. As others have stated, it is a great place for ATVing, shooting and generally playing around in the bush.

Nice and close to Vernon for shopping (the local shopping is the sh!ts) and close enough to Kamloops for Costco and the big box stores. Much closer to the U.S. border than before, if the damn thing ever opens.

Just an opinion, but if you are a younger guy still in the job market, might be best to have something lined up for when you arrive here. If you are retired, or close to it, not a biggie.

Downside is missing the kids and grand-kids...

Overall, happy with the move. But....I will always be an Albertan.

You can’t exactly call living in Saskatchewan living. You wanna regret not moving? I moved from Alberta 15 yrs ago. Lived in Kelowna and now Comox Valley. The island is better imo.

Work ethic? You mean gotta work like working 365 days a year? Many people in BC have different priorities like enjoying life.
Big snow storm on Monday so I took the day off to go sledding yesterday.

Booze is cheaper in b. C now, everything Berta has been raised, insurance, smokes, list goes on

Chit this summer when I went to help a buddy combine, nanton 's gas was 3 cents cheaper than sicamous

Bout the only thing that is more, is a place to buy, but then that comes with higher wages I guess

I just checked and sicamous gas is 14c a liter more than sylvan lake and the house price is way higher until you get to the high end stuff. And really not much for sale.

Housing, yup ****s got stupid here

All the people from hongcoover and out of province, paying high cause of low inventory, which there was lots for sale till anything listed is gone

I know this from last summer, we could have asked what ever we wanted for our place, but trying to find something to replace it, well we quit looking as listings had offers the same day listed, so you couldn't even look at it

Usually gas is higher. But I can live with that.
Nanton probably isnt the cheapest gas in Alberta

But trying to find a place right now is a challenge. Might have to pay a lot. Or maybe build something. Can find some decent lots around.
