This is sad news to hear anytime, never mind so early in the season. :( But lets keep the faith until their safe return. Best of luck to all those looking, may you find them quick, and find them safe.

Sledders are OK...this was posted on snowest about an hour ago by one of the riders:

Thanks revelstoke sar

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanx for the concern, we had a mechanical issue with my new m8. Fawken dealer didn't install washers on the upper or lower shock mounts. The first float shock fell into the shock tower and I lost my steering. We had to disassamble the ski mounts (to steal washers) and remove both front shocks. By the time we had the repair completed we had lost all visibility. We back tracked the gps tracking to the glacier lodge cabin and bunked down in there. I was sending "we are ok" from my Spot messenger to my girlfriend and sledding partner. None of the transmssions were received. We starting sending out the messages from approx 6pm and through out the night. Revelstoke search and rescue also tried sending spot transmissions today as well with noone recieving the messages either. My advice is don't rely on spot and get a sat phone. We got up this morning and followed our gps tracks back to the frisby cabin. We were heading back to the truck and met up with revelstoke SARS. Big thanks to those guys for coming out! Snow conditions were great and woke up to 2ft of fresh up top. I'll post pics when I get home as I am posting this from my phone.

Makes you wonder about the reliability of the SPOT system

GPS has saved my bacon in white-out conditions more times than I care to remember.

First thing I thought as well - "thanks a bunch SPOT".
lol

But maybe when he said "none were received" by his friends - could mean that the friends weren't looking/checking. Or maybe they weren't doing something right when sending?
Tough to judge til a person hears the whole story in detail.

Now a Sat phone - THAT would come in handy.

Can a person RENT a Sat phone in Valemount - just like people rent Beacons??

Here's a place that rents Sat phones -

Iridium Satellite Phone Rentals

7 bucks a day and 2 bucks a minute. Too bad they are outta Ontario. Sat phone rentals might be the way to go!

READ:
Okay I tried the SPOT last night before bed in thick cloud and rain. Worked Flawless! Tried it again this morning walking the dog, Flawless! Tried again a few minutes ago Flawless! I logged on to my SPOT account and saw the OK messages were sent on my night out BUT my girlfriends phone did not show the messages. Appears that her cell phone is the problem as the messages were sent to my email and my other contacts email. I apologize to spot for the misleading information on my behalf and applaud them for chiming in. I will also post this in general and on snowest to clear up any misinformation.:beer:
