A 5 point night for young Connor.

You gotta think that his 25 pts in 19 games or something ridiculous like that keeps him in the discussion for the Calder?

Or will eastern bias phuck us over again and see it go to Eichel or Panarin?

the east will screw connor over, but if can keep this pace it would be hard to give it to any one else!

I mean really, the kid is something else. The other rookies are good, but they aren't McDavid good. It's a not a question. imo

But!! I won't put it past the ridiculousness of the guys who choose. Just like the year they were voting for the ALl Star Game and even tho Ovechkin switched positions, some of the writers voted for him in his old position (LW) and some voted for him in his new position (RW) and Taylor Hall got bumped! Like what the h3ll?

I think if the oilers put a solid end to the season it would sure help CD's chances ....

I think 97 & 14 will be a force to be reckoned with. I am not even a huge fan of 14, but he is the perfect complimentary player for 97. 67 has really impressed me with that line this year too - that is actually turning into a decent contract!

I think they said 29 points in 6 games for that line? Excellent. Sure makes me smile to watch some of their plays.

So... does anyone know the math on playoffs odds? If the Oilers were to string together a 6 or 8 game win streak, would they still have a shot at squeaking in or even making a race of it?

I think they can only lose 4 or 5 games from here on in to make the playoffs... not good.... another #1 draft pick coming up :(

I'm not sure how playoff selection works these days...... do they take the top 8 teams from eastern/western conference, or do they take the top four from each division? I thought the pacific division was such a log jam that they still had a shot....... or could at least make it interesting. (but I could just as easily be wrong)

Not being mathematically eliminated by this point in the season feels like a win already ;)

I would literally PEE my pants if we won the draft lottery again and drafted Auston. Like no kidding. But, I just like to watch the world burn.

Also, the Leafs are in total free fall mode and they are going to make a serious run for 30th, I think

top 3 teams from each division, then next 2 best teams from the conference.... so 8 teams from each conference

The top 3 seeds in each division; Metro, Atlantic, Central, & Pacific. Then the Wildcards are outside of the top 3 in their division, but have the next highest point totals. You can have 5 seeds from 1 division and only 3 from another. Which is weird because you can have a first seed with 75 pts and a WildCat with 95 pts LOL

Looking at the standings then... it seems the Oil are 9 points out of the last spot in the conference, and have 26 (I think) games left..... that's hope for an Oilers fan! lol

Thanks you both for the explanation. I know it has changed a few times in my life.... I think they should just take the top 16 teams... seems more fair to me.

I think you would see a lot of lopsided years where one conference has a heavier presence. I think they went more to the NBA style with this seeding format

Lopsided but fair IMO.... I'd be okay with that. If ten of the best teams in the NHL are from the east, so be it..... it would make for more evenly matched playoffs....

yah, they mentioned on twitter last nite that 4 or 5 losses in the remaining would probably be enough to make playoffs... We'll see over the next month or so

I think McDavid has a chance at the Calder but it is highly unlikely. He will have to average 1.5 points per game or so for the rest of the season to challenge Panarin in my opinion, but if there is a player to do it I think it would be McDavid. Also cant forget about the leagues love affair with Chicago (deservedly so though), so they are always in the spotlight and get way more attention.

Also the Oilers chances of making the playoffs are humorous. Its not impossible but darn close to it. They have played 2 or more games than all the teams they are chasing and they need to make up 9 points at the very least. They need to hope that a majority of the teams ahead of them go on a decent losing skid while the Oilers go on a amazing winning streak, then they will have a good shot.

92 points might get you in, probably misses by 1 or 2. The Oilers need 43 points in 26 games to reach that. So 43 of a possible 52 available, 3 or 4 losses and a couple of ties and they are done.

McDavid should get a good look for the Calder if he finishes in the mid 50s for points. He dominates much more than any other rookie and is from the Toronto area so the media is paying some attention. Panarin is 24 which may sway some voters away from him. Too bad they don't play Toronto again.
