Just bought an 05 Renegade 600 HO SDI as my first sled and and as a learning tool. We will primarily ride in the Fernie area. I have been dirtbiking the Rockies for years but the mechanicals and riding techniques of sleds is all new to me this year. If all goes well this season then I will probably get a new (or newish) Summit for next year and my son will ride the Renegade.

So the question is what can I do to the stock Renegade to make it more able in the deeper and steeper stuff? I'm mainly talking suspension, adjustments and minor mods as opposed to "get a new track" type stuff. Even though I haven't had it out riding anywhere yet, except my acreage, I bought Pilot 6.9 skis for better floatation.

Also any riding tips like "always stop with the sled pointing downhill" would be appreciated - I already know the "don't hit trees" one from my dirtbiking days though....

Yea track'll help a lot. Counter steering help to get the sled on its side 😉. In deep powder flat foot it and just lean, easier to control. Basics. Lol

Are you talking longer or bigger lugs or both? The Renegade has a 137x16 track so the foot print is equal to a 144x15, or so i've heard. More of an issue with it is probably that it is a 1.25"...?

I am not looking to spend a whole lot as I would like to get a new machine for next season and this one will be for friends and family to ride.

I wouldn't really compare the footprint like that... But to each thier own. Everybody started to make thier renegades into cross over machines by simply upgrading the 1.25 into a 1.75. Not very expensive but that will be an upgrade to improve that thing ten fold. You should really look into it... Unfortunatly there isnt really any... "adjustments" that you can to do make that thing better in the mountians. And the end of the day it still needs bigger claws! But then again.... people used to ride in the mountains with alot smaller machines than that! Congrats on the new sled hope you love it! PS: seriosly look into that track upgrade.... It worked so well that brp now makes whats called a renegade backcountry... which is a regular renegade upgraded with 6.9 skis like you already have... and an upgraded 1.75 track from the 1.25... FYI.

I would not waste any money on the Renegade -- as you will not see any returns when you sell it.

Understand that the renegade is an excellent sled but limited to a more packed snow condition

You will not be able to "Mountain Ride" in fluffy powder but you can ride up the trails and do lots of playing where people have packed the snow down.

In about March to May you probably could ride the 1.25" track all over the trails and valley floors and even some hill climbs on south faceing slopes that are settled and more pack.

Use the money towards a newer summit

After a couple of years of Mountain Riding you will probably sell the Renegade and end up with 2 true Mountain Sleds

That way your son can follow you most anywhere.

You will see the limitations of a 1.25" track once you start riding

We all start out somewhere but eventually most end up owning true mountain sleds as they can be riden most anywhere.

Remember sleds are a toilet for money so plan to minimize wasted money IE track upgrades, new front suspension.

Hook up with a group of sledders of your caliber, ask a lot of questions, ride to your ability -- not theirs....

Lot's of great information.

The kind of off road riding that I liked to do recently (i'm in my early 50's now) with my KTM thumper was to look at a map and find an destination and go explore it. That is what I will probably want to do with the sled.

I know that Renegade will have it's limitations but I want to do the adjustments to the suspension, limiter strap etc to make it the best that IT can be in deeper snow and the operators manual has no information on these things.

I will be riding around the Fernie and Cranbrook area (I won't be going to Revy to challenge the peaks there) It has very low km's, is in perfect shape, was dealer maintained and I paid $4700 for it so if I get a season of fun and learning out of it I'm happy. I can see it won't be a true deep powder machine without a lot more money and I guess I'm fine with that now - that may change in a hurry though on a blue sky powder day...

I've heard of taking the sway bar off (or disconnecting one side) to make it easier to transfer side to side. Any thoughts on that?

you need tunnel extension, rails, drivers and a 156x2.5" track. dont waste money on anything else.this will set you back 2g so its up to you if you want ti drop that much into a sled. i wouldnt spin anything longer than a 154 on a 600. the next best option would be getting the tallest lug possible on your 137.not suee what that is. you may even be able to stretch a 146 onto that skidframe but i have never done itso i cant say forsure.

...the next best option would be getting the tallest lug possible on your 137....

"Before track lengths on mountain machines began increasing at an alarming pace, the track lengths on the
crossovers
would have put them in the mountain category. In terms of track footprint the 16” wide 137” track is equivalent to 15” wide 146” track. But there is some sacrifice in cornering and maneuverability with a wider track." (
quote from a review of 'crossover' sleds)

The PowderMax 1.75" (Camoplast Challenger) is available for the Renegade and Amazon has it for $537 which I didn't think was too bad of a price. If that would significantly add to the capabilities then that would be a relatively inexpensive upgrade to make it better in deeper snow.

u have a 16 wide track right ??????

prob about 500 for the track and skid .... track has a few lugs gone but is still usable... if i didn't put a long track on my 04 144 chassis i would still be runing it...

you could get a 137 2" but big money as not a common track. a buddy did his and i thin it was 1500 just for the track, but big difference in the powder he said. if it was my sled i would stay with the factory track with the 137 16 wide you have the same amount of track on the ground ,in sqaure inches, as a 151 15 wide. the bigger paddle is nice but how often do you plan on riding the hills? is the lost trail capabilities woth it going to the longer track for a few mountain trips a year? or would it be better to ride it for another year the way it is save that money and upgrade to a actual mountain sled.
tough decision to make imo keep pouring money into it or just sell and get what you want. jmo.

I have the 16" but was concerned about the overall length of the 144" in my tunnel - I do not want to extend the tunnel. Could you send me a couple of pictures of it - either on here or by email.

I just ordered a new track for the girlfriend's Renegade X 800r, 137x16x1.75, $600 from Curtis at Tracks Canada. Also going to drop the top gear from 25t to 23t for a little bit more bottom end. All said less than $700 to make a bit better off trail machine.

I'm not looking to make a mountain sled out of a trail sled, just want it to perform better if she gets into a bit of deep stuff. This will be a good set up until she is ready to go to a mountain chassis in the next year or 2.

The Renegade's are a blast to ride on the trail, stupid fast and handle great.

u might have to put an ext on from a 144 summit.... think the track might be too far back out the flap...

but then i put a 151 in place of a 144 with out and tunnel ext.... just shimmed the flap out a bit .... worked just fine

i think it was better cause if u catwalked it wouldn't rip the flap off .....

Not a bad price for the track. Amazon had them for US$537.00 (free shipping) which is about C$550 but you have to ship to a US address. There is a place in Eureka Montana that will take delivery for you but if Tracks Canada has them for $600 then its not worth the trip over the border.

Going from a 137 to a 144 should only be about 3-1/2" longer (7/2). I will check my clearance.
