I would never put up a tarp building. But thats just me... I wouldnt build a pole shed either though...

Pole shed: If youre going to go 14' go 16' so you can get a 14' door. Price difference wouldnt be much at all.

Geoff, have you priced out footings, 2x6 framed walls and strapping with metal siding and doors and windows? Naturally, the roof also. Leave the floor until later.

Doug,

That's how I built my existing shop 5 years ago. Framed the walls out of 2x6's, stood them up, and put up prefab rafters. After that strapped with 2x4's and tinned the entire building and roof. Between me, my dad, and my brother, we built my 30x32 in two weekends. I look back now and my original plan was to build a 34 x 70...half heated, half cold storage with 16' walls and a mezzanine up top. At the time I would have had to take a loan for it and we only lived out there for a year. The existing shop I built out of pocket and I do regret not going bigger, but at the time it was the best idea.

I looked at doing that again. It's not out of the realm of possibilities, but my time seems to be getting shorter and shorter to do this stuff and I doubt I would do the concrete work at this point. Locallly good concrete guys are hard to come by and when you do, expensive to bring out to a rural location. When I looked at putting up a used Quonset I have a good line on, I looked at doing a simple footing for baseplates for a 38x40. I needed about 13 yards @ $220 yd here delivered. I could see footing costing my $4K by the time I'm done as most here seem to charge $3.50/sq for formwork and finishing.

I could still go this way, but it isn't likely. If I was doing this 4 years ago pre short people running around and I could go at it for 14 hours a day like in the past, I'd probably be doing this...but the time isn't there like it used to be and I'm too cheap of a Ukranian to hire everything out for a job that is usually done half assed.

From what I've seen pole sheds are very hit and miss. Sure seems to depend on the crew building it

There is nothing wrong with a pole building its just as sound if its done properly. Ours is a pole, i would always spray urethane ins on the walls for structure and its unbeatable for insulation. Make sure the company builds them with 4-2"x8" laminated together and poles every 4ft. There will be a pole every 2ft on either side of the door. Im not against stick frames at all, but pouring a grade beam foundation in our area is basically $95/ft. Do the math on that!!!

Just giving ya the gears back buddy! From what you told me in the past you guys didn't have a lot where you could work on much indoors..for the gear you have you needed it.

I'm surrounded by poor farmers back around home. I've heard the shop story from a poor farming buddy all last year...his shop cost him $1.9M and he complained the whole time about how he's broke and he won't be able to do anything anymore...well maybe he didn't need a shop worth that kind of money?

Ya it was tight. Could get one combine or one tractor or one semi in at a time, but it was full. Ya 1.9m is stupid money for a farm shop.
