bottom line go with what you like best when new they all have warrenty and diesel policy is longer then your bumper to bumper!!! I worked at a gm dealer for over 5 years and know for a fact the duramax is a big pice of isuzu POS now work at a shop that does all late model diesels the front ends go on all 3 with dodge being the worst the trannys go on the dodges and since the 7.3 ford has had much of a motor (havent had alot of probleums with the 6.7 ford yet.......) so they all have their probleums so pick what you like best! i have a 2000 7.3 with almost 400 000 on it and have never dune a major repair (less then 1000 spent on the drivtrain other then maitnence) bought a new truk this year and because i dont truse any of the new diesels and i am a ford guy i went with a gas truck

curious what makes the duramax a big POS?

Actually I called this whole thread in post #4 by saying its going to turn into a 'mine is better than yours thread' and I also didn't help matters..lol. But how could it not with a thread title like 'who has the most reliable truck' honestly!? So maybe ops should lock it before it gets really silly!?

Where is the 3/4 ton Diesel Tundra when you need it? :)


Best thing to do is go out and look at the vehicle you want to purchase. Drive it and if you like it, then ask questions about that particular year/model. Everyone looks at the motors, never the tranny's and running gear.

GM's (Chev) - 05/06/07(classic) all good motors with minimal polution gear. Stay away from the 08 NBS if possible. The Allison 6 speed is a great tranny. The IFS is what it is. Don't lift it and it will be fine.

Dodge - always been a fan of the Cummins, depending on where you ride (hiway/city) you might consider a winter cover as they don't tend to make as much heat. When lifting the stearing boxes and a few other items get out of geometry. Make sure if you are lifting them you do it right. I think Dodge has some of the best stock headlights for hiway driving. I curse all of you that have them.

Ford - I'm not a tall guy and find the Lariat seats are too deep. Just a weird feeling I have. The trannys, they can take a crap load of HP. If possible stay with something newer that doesn't have the 6.0L. Its a good motor with some updates though. You can pick up a lower mileage Ford much cheaper than the rest. Thank the fleet sales.

Any diesel that is being used as a daily driver I would consider a Espar heater. Short hauls kill these newer trucks. Any of them will have their flaws. Give me a Ford chassis with a GM body and a Cummins back by a built up Allison and I would be a happy guy.

Oh and for you who really care about sales, F series also includes all F series so everything bigger than the F-350. GM/Chev Sierra/Silverado and Dodge Ram don't have a lot to compare above 1 ton. Makes it sound good though.

One thing I don't like with my 09 GMC duramax is the dash and lower panels rattle like crazy when it's cold. Once the cab warms up the rattles go away. I turfed the DPF and programmed it with EFI live; of course this voids any warranty coverage on drivetrain.

edit One thing I like is the absolute stupid power, turbo braking and flexibility that goes with EFI live tuning.

They are all awsome trucks but have heard of story's that the 4 wheel drive in the new super duty series is there only flaw, also the new cummins 6.7 is not nearly as reliable as the 5.9 the injectors in the new dodges have been getting water in them, the new Chevy/gmc Is not the nicest truck interior wise and may not produce the best power on paper but nothing beats the allison transmission by fair the best thing to happen to general motors diesel pickups, best truck for your money is the Chevy/gmc if you are doing alot of pulling.

SO sorry for this guys... I am new to this... thanks for all of you who took the time... lots of information to go threw... and yes I agree they all have their plus... I think fords look the best... GM/chevy have the best auto trani and I like the cummins...

I guess after reading all this I just wanted to see what people were having problems with... I have an old 5.9 but I knew when I bought it i'd need the lift pump upgrade and maybe new injector pump...and someone told me to buy a track bar and steering stabablizer... id did and have never had a problem with "the death wobble".. a forum like this saved me a lot of money! I don't know much about the new diesels and I know each company has different issues and normally there is an easy fix around them... right now im thinking of driving to red deer and taking a look at an 08 f350 diesel... hard to find clean used diesel trucks in Alberta...

if anyone knows a good diesel machanic for a 5.9 in Peace River or GP area please let me know... mine needs work...

I think whoever said pick the one you like to drive and drive it had a very good point! Thanks for all your help... ill try not be too open ended next time

Duramax!!! most comfortable to drive and very reliable! have 70k on my 2010. mileage is ?? 20 is tops mt, and pulling my 5th wheel / boat gets about 12 to 14 depending on wind.

I own an 08 duramax, love the power and comfort to drive however i wish i would have looked a little closer to the other two now. I'm 6'2 and find the head room, sucks and is far better in the ford by probably 4-5" for sure, where my chevy it almost touches. and the leg room in the back seat of the fords is incredible as well. dodge mega cab has tons of room in the back, but i'm not sure about head room up front. since you will be putting a baby seat in, i find when we carry my niece who is 3 she can kick the seat which drives me batty. my brother has the same truck with 2 car seat, one which is turned backwards which is close to being a tight fit if someone taller is sitting in the front.
For comfort with taller people and kids, my first choice would be ford.

They other thing if you do look at dodge is to look at the 2010+ over the older ones for comfort and driveability. Huge difference.

Plain and simple, the cummins is the most reliable diesel out there, no if ands or buts. I cant say the same for the truck around the engine, but best bang for your buck is a new dodge

I just bought a 2011 Silverado 2500HD CC Duramax.I have only put just over 800km on it.So far I find it a lot of truck compared to my half ton.Powerwise it spools up real quick and flies up the hills.I have not towed with it yet.Gm's interiors are sadly lacking compared to the new fords.I bought it mainly for the Duramax Allison combo and the reviews on Pickup trucks.com.So far with probably 20'city80/hwy I am around 19mpg.I never really saw that mileage from my 5.3 chev gasser.The allison tranny is so smooth you can't really feel it shift ,the exhaust brake is going to be real nice when I start towing.I also usually buy Chevrolet because I know the General manager at our chev dealer and I deal with him direct so I usually come away with a pretty good deal.I don't like the high price of diesel but so far its a wash with the better fuel economy of my duramax

Okay this is getting absolutely stupid on this thread! why wouldnt you combine GMC/chevy they both make 3/4 and 1 ton vehicles why the hell would you combine a ranger or an f150 into an HD comparison? That being said and myself being a chevy dealer and a ford dealer i can say it truthfully that ALL yes that is ALL big 3 Have really really brought amazing trucks to the game! stock 400 hp and 800 torgue we ran a new dmax on the dyno and it made a nice 375 RWHP!!! same with the new ford thats pretty damn good considering the 2010 lmm dmax claimed 365 hp and made 270 rwhp! Yes the ford and chev have the most emmissions on the vehicles dodge is the least but come on california controls emmissions so it is bound to come for cummins as well. Yes putting a dpf/egr delete or urea delete on your truck voids warranty I personnally dont care cause my dmax has been chipped since day 1 I know have 103,505 km's on the truck and no check engine lights! Am i worried about my 160,000 powertrain warranty with my emmissions removed not at all because i trust these new trucks! Ford finally and I mean finally in 2008 started to step up there game the 6.4 was a tuners dream motor and in stock form a nightmare! Chev had issues as well with injectors and heads on the lly 04.5-05 6.6. Dodge was pretty solid minus that absolutely garbage transmission they had! Now all three trucks have produced 3 nasty trucks that keep getting better. it's all a personnal choice if i were you I would schedule 3 test drives with similar trucks different brands and see what you like best. if you listen to everyone on here your gonna end up owning nothing!!!

I sure think it is! I know the guys doing aftermarket work on them sure think they are as well and some think they are better. all a personnal thing how many 5.9's with 650 rwhp can get squirrely coming onto a freeway at 65 mph. Both great motors it's a cummins come on no need to doubt it hahaha

Strip the emisions garbage off the truck, get a programmer (ppe or smarty) and you will get around 5 mpg more out of it and a lot more reliability. For how much it costs to do to a cummins it is well worth it. turns that 6.7 into a solid performer.

on another note how brutal is it that you can't even put a set of stock size m/t's on a chev without ripping off the mud flaps. and a set of 285's are out of the question. but this is my 2 cents on diesel trucks. Cummins motor with a 6 speed standard in my opinion is the most reliable unit out there. cheap to maintain and repair. other than the powertrain the rest of the truck i dont care to much for, i'm told i will enjoy the 2012 cab much better so i'm looking forward to that.

I own a 2012 ford dual wheel deisel. This truck rips and can pull a 4 place from Revi to leduc on a tank of full. At 120km. Last trip we took my friends brand new dodge and same trailer. More than two tanks of fuel and no power at all. Can't pass unless we r facing down hill. It is a sweet truck in and out. Rides nice. But for me power is everything and the new dodge is gutless. So if power matters. Duramax or ford is what's up
