I just called this 1-800 number you supplied in this document and it isnt even in service. I suggest you call your local communication store and ask as I did. they confirmed to me that there is NO required licence (for albertians) to have in order to operate a 2-way radio UNLESS you are a commercial operator using repeater channels. Ladd channels are included in all programming as well. Please dont let this deter you from driving SAFE on the back roads.

Just spoke with Industry Canada at 1-800-461-2646. A license is required for personal use on forestry and resource roads. The license is $41/year per radio prorated from April 1 and will give you the BC and Alberta forestry and BC resource road channels. They will fax a Mobile Radio Application.

I just talked to Richard at western midland in Calgary. A licence is required. If you get caught ..$400 fine. License cost is $40 to $50 a year .. I have one on order.

i agree mike... as long as the same dude is not on the road that we encountered... i know for a fact he was radio and let know we were coming.. and he had atleast a half mile visibility... so in this case the radio doesnt promise road sharing compliance.... or courteousy.. this guy was just trying to prov a point... but yes i will be getting a radio too... one more reason sledding is an expensive sport... but u cant put a price on safety..

Grew up in the industry, still work in the industry, worked for logging contractors, consultants and industry. Never been checked, never heard of anyone checked, and don't anyone with a license or even really heard of needing one (although it would appear you do). Save your 41 bucks.

I do know someone that got a $500 fine and radio seized for a programmable radio though. DOT guy even got an RCMP escort to come seize the radio lol.

I use a handheld and just got a magnetic mount and screw my antenna out and a cheap little adapter with a quick connect to the external antenna. Works way better...up to 40k plus depending on layout of area. That was about $100 but if you are on the road lots it's worth it. Handheld doesn't work that great in the cab of a truck especially in a twisty valley.
